On September 11, 2001, 24-year-old Gerard Way was commuting into Manhattan for his Cartoon Network internship when he witnessed the World Trade Center towers collapse.

He later described the scene as feeling like being inside a disaster film, something his mind could barely process.

At the time, Way had trained as an artist and was pursuing a career in animation and comics.

After 9/11, that suddenly felt meaningless to him.

He picked up a guitar and wrote “Skylines and Turnstiles,” a song inspired by what he had witnessed. It became the first song written for My Chemical Romance.

Way then recruited drummer Matt Pelissier and guitarist Ray Toro, beginning the band that would become My Chemical Romance.
