That iguana thinks you might eat it. The wave is the lizard equivalent of putting your hands up. Lizards have been doing this kind of thing since the time of the dinosaurs, long before any humans existed to wave at.

When a small lizard sees something much bigger than itself, it raises one front leg and waves it slowly. It's a "please don't kill me" signal. The lizard is saying "I see you, I'm tiny, I won't fight back." Researchers in Argentina filmed this exact behavior in 2019 and found the wave can work as a peace gesture, a way of telling something bigger "don't bother chasing me." Bearded dragons in Australia do it, iguanas across the Americas do it, and tiny lizards in Argentina do it. These lizards come from different families, spread across the world, with no contact between them. They all face the same problem: don't get eaten by something bigger. So they all wave the same way.

The lizard does it without thinking. It's a hardwired reflex, like a sneeze. A big shape appears overhead, and the lizard's body waves before the brain has caught up.

Iguanas also have a built-in alarm for things coming from above. They have what biologists call a "third eye": a tiny dot on top of the skull, with a small lens and a basic light sensor underneath. It's a fast shadow detector. When a bird flies overhead, the dot picks up the shadow before the regular eyes do, which is how wild iguanas spot hawks. So when you lean over the enclosure to "say hi," your shadow falls on the iguana's third eye, your face fills its regular eyes, and its brain reads "huge thing overhead, looks like a hawk." Cue the wave.

The lizard in this video is also a long way from home. Green iguanas live wild in places like Mexico, Brazil, and the Caribbean. The pet trade, plus people letting their iguanas go once they grow too big, has spread them across Hong Kong, Singapore, and parts of Malaysia. So the viral clip shows a tropical American lizard, sitting in a Malaysian zoo, doing a "please don't eat me" gesture at a curious tourist, while millions of people online call it a friendly hello.

It's terrified. And being very polite about it.
