White people won't even accept a mere name change but somehow we think they accept reform and transformation.
These people would choose death over letting go of their ill-earned colonial and apartheid privileges.
South African group Joy perform Paradise Road live on BBC TV, c 1980's. Joy was a South African female vocal group who had a chart-topping hit in South Africa with Paradise Road. The record spent 9 weeks at No. 1 spot.
Sometime back I watched Rio Ferdinand chatting to Steve Gerrard and the latter spoke about how the England squad they were both part of had super talented individuals who couldn’t be a team, and stayed in their rooms in tournaments. Bafana Bafana doesn’t have that challenge.
What we are teaching you today is far richer than what you have learnt in 30 years.
Under Motsepe:
1. CAF’s finances are stabilised and transparent. That’s not imitation, that’s governance maturity.
2. Relationships with FIFA are constructive, not confrontational. That’s not weakness, that’s leverage.
3. African football is positioned as a partner, not a petitioner. Big difference.
Hayatou ruled in an age where Africa had to shout to be heard. Motsepe leads in an age where Africa can negotiate, influence, and co-create. And here’s the uncomfortable truth many like you won’t say out loud: The old model of proud resistance delivered symbolism, but limited growth.
The new model of strategic cooperation is delivering money, visibility, and opportunity. African football doesn’t need a strongman anymore. It needs a chairman, calm, credible, globally respected, and commercially fluent leadership. That's Patrice Motsepe, Mr 30 years.
Brother Colin, Issa Hayatou’s words mattered in his time. They reflected an era where defiance was the currency of independence. CAF stood upright by resisting imitation. That posture served African football when global football structures were overtly dismissive and extractive. Credit to him.
But leadership is not a museum. You don’t preserve relevance by freezing philosophy in amber. Patrice Motsepe represents a different kind of power, not reactionary independence, but strategic alignment. There’s a critical difference. CAF today is not “jumping because FIFA jumps.” CAF is moving at the same altitude because African football has finally earned its seat at cruising level.
Teach your West African audience that, isolation is not sovereignty. Collaboration is not submission.
