Just a theory.
I think Cheng Xiaoshi and Lu Guang tried to change the past to save Cheng Xiaoshi’s father from the Bahati fire, but this change had major consequences, most notably affecting Xia Fei’s future and causing him to disappear from the present.
This may have happened through a photo taken by Vein, allowing Cheng Xiaoshi and Lu Guang to enter his body through that photo. This would explain how Vein realized that something had changed and that someone had tampered with the past. It may also explain why he immediately tried to kill them and told them that this was the punishment for changing the past.
Before Vein attacked them, it seems that Cheng Xiaoshi and Lu Guang had already realized the mistake they had made and wanted to fix it. Cheng Xiaoshi’s mother, who was inside Wang Qing’s body, was also there and tried to stop him from making the situation worse. However, Cheng Xiaoshi felt responsible and insisted on fixing his mistake as quickly as possible.
This could put the argument we saw in Lu Guang’s memories into context, when Cheng Xiaoshi shouted:
“I’m fine! Why don’t you trust me?”
That same night, Vein attacked them and killed Cheng Xiaoshi. We also see Cheng Xiaoshi apologize to Lu Guang before he dies. His apology may have been connected to his guilt over placing the responsibility of saving everyone on Lu Guang.
When Cheng Xiaoshi asked Lu Guang to save them, three important scenes appeared: Qiao Ling’s death, Xiao Li’s death, and the Bahati fire.
This suggests that the fire was directly connected to Cheng Xiaoshi’s request. He may not have been asking Lu Guang to save only Qiao Ling and Xiao Li, but also to correct the mistake they had made regarding the Bahati fire.
What is especially interesting is that after Lu Guang remembered this argument, the scene immediately shifted to Xia Fei visiting the studio. This transition may not have been random. It could be pointing to a connection between the argument in the original timeline and Xia Fei’s disappearance, especially if the argument was about trying to fix the consequences of changing the past.
There is another important detail. When Qiao Ling asked Lu Guang what he was hiding, we were shown four scenes: Xia Fei visiting the studio, Xiao Li’s death, Cheng Xiaoshi’s death, and Qiao Ling’s death.
So why does Lu Guang remember Xia Fei’s visit while his memories of the others are connected to their deaths?
The possible answer is that Xia Fei was not killed like the others. Instead, he disappeared from the present as a consequence of the change to the past.
This also connects to Xia Fei’s ability. There is a suspicion that Xia Fei possesses an ability related to manipulating or erasing memories, and we have a similar suspicion about Cheng Xiaoshi’s father.
Because of this, I think Cheng Xiaoshi’s father originally possessed this ability. During the fire, Xia Fei was nearby, and Cheng Xiaoshi’s father sacrificed himself to save him. The ability was then transferred to Xia Fei.
This could explain why Xia Fei lost his memories. He may have unconsciously used his ability on himself, causing him to erase his memories of what happened during the incident.
At the same time, this could explain the connection between saving Cheng Xiaoshi’s father and Xia Fei’s disappearance. If the original timeline was one where Cheng Xiaoshi’s father sacrificed himself to save Xia Fei, then changing the past would erase the sacrifice that originally led to Xia Fei’s survival.
In other words, when Cheng Xiaoshi and Lu Guang changed Cheng Xiaoshi’s father’s fate, even if only slightly, they may have altered the chain of events that originally led to his sacrifice and Xia Fei’s survival. That small change may have affected Xia Fei’s fate and ultimately caused him to disappear from the present.
This could also explain why Lu Guang is so concerned about Xia Fei and his safety. He carries the responsibility for what happened in the original timeline, so when Xia Fei was kidnapped, Lu Guang may have panicked because he thought his actions had caused the past to affect Xia Fei again.
It also gives more meaning to the placement of Xia Fei’s visit to the studio alongside the scenes where Lu Guang cried over the others. Xia Fei suffered a similar fate, just in a different way.
In the end, Lu Guang has always warned Cheng Xiaoshi not to change the past because changing the past means changing the present.
Perhaps the original timeline itself was the very example of the consequences Lu Guang was trying to warn Cheng Xiaoshi about.

Lu Guang only dived back in time (permanently) once + all the "animation errors" before, during, and after Cheng Xiaoshi's death scene were on purpose.
