During menstruation a woman's “energy” (prana or apana vayu in Ayurvedic terms) moves downward
While temple energy moves Upward causing imbalance for the woman's hormones.
So instead of explaining all these that it might be disrupting their hormones

Ancestors might have said not enter temples or along the ages people just remembered the rules and forgot the reasons .
In ancient times women did heavy physical work. Menstruation was seen as a time for rest and isolation for health so they were excused from daily duties and rituals :)
