i forgot to follow up on this, but i'm pretty happy with the solution i came up with. we have
1) reduction of overall info content by reducing reference signal to a much less obtrusive visual element and
2) adjusting the rest of the design to be less visually overwhelming
to no one's surprise in particular, this didn't happen
new target is... this weekend?
i should have tracked how many total hours this project took, certainly feels like pissing labour down the drain at times
so here's one of mine. the convulsions of the PSD in the noise background are completely uninteresting. what matters is the peaks and how superimposing POD solutions creates a distribution that matches the reference

i used to dislike figures like this bc i couldn't tell what the individual lines were doing, until i realised that what you're meant to take away is that
A. the lines are *largely* doing the same thing for most of the domain
B. there are outliers
the specifics are irrelevant
surely the university should have a vested interest in increasing published research, giving its alumni add. experience & raising prestige?? but it’s just made as unappealing as possible. incomprehensible honestly
this wasn’t really meant as a whistleblowing account, but man, the absolute lack of structural accommodations for publishing work based on grad theses at this school is shocking. i don’t understand how they can be so profoundly uninterested in students doing what i’m trying to do
i’m in a situation where i have to illegally prolong my enrolment (despite having a 40h job) to have access to the resources i need to author this paper & personally associated bear the risk+bureaucratic efforts. this also means that i’m not compensated for my work in any way.
i can’t tell if the ASME tex document class is broken or if i’m doing something tremendously wrong, but man does it behave strangely
i adjusted the margins and it made the title disappear, now i changed them back and it still isn’t compiling (!)
