Archaeologists digging through Viking-age settlements in northern Germany kept finding cats. Not local cats.
The bones dated to somewhere between 700 and 1000 AD. But the DNA told a stranger story than anyone expected.
In 2017, a team led by Claudio Ottoni published a large genetic study of ancient cat remains from sites across Europe. When they analyzed the Viking-era specimens from northern Germany, the mitochondrial DNA pointed clearly to the Near East and Egypt, lineages that had no business being that far north at that point in history.
The most likely explanation: the cats had sailed there.
Norse seafarers kept cats aboard their vessels for the same reason every maritime culture did. A ship carrying grain is also carrying rats. A ship carrying rats loses its provisions. A ship with a good cat keeps both the grain and the crew fed.
What made these particular cats remarkable was the distance they had traveled. Egyptian and Near Eastern cats, aboard Viking longships, moving north through trade routes and raiding routes across several centuries.
And when they reached shore, they were not treated as working tools.
A number of these animals were buried with care. The skeletal record suggests they were valued, not just useful. In several sites, cat bones appear alongside human graves, which researchers read as deliberate placement, not coincidence.
Over generations, something else happened: the cats grew larger. The remains show a gradual increase in body size across the Viking age, which researchers connect to better feeding and, possibly, selective pressure aboard ship.
Some researchers have noted that these ancient imported cats may sit near the base of what eventually became the Norwegian Forest Cat: the large, thick-coated breed that Scandinavians would later call the skogkatt, the forest cat.
If that lineage holds, one of the most beloved cat breeds in the world traces part of its ancestry to Egyptian mousers who crossed the North Sea on longships more than a thousand years ago.
The Norse sagas mention wolves. They mention ravens. They mention bears.
Nobody wrote down the cats.
Would you have brought one aboard?
One thing the Ottoni study left open: whether these Egyptian and Near Eastern cats arrived in a single wave or spread gradually across multiple journeys over centuries. The genetic data points to a slow maritime dispersal, ship by ship, port by port, across the Viking world.

A single bird has just accomplished one of the most extraordinary feats in the animal kingdom — flying nearly one-third of the way around the Earth without stopping to eat, drink, or rest.
The record-breaker is a five-month-old Bar-tailed Godwit that flew nonstop from Alaska to Tasmania, Australia. Covering 8,425 miles in just over 11 days, it set a new record for the longest nonstop flight ever documented in any bird.
What makes this journey even more astonishing is that it was the young godwit’s very first migration. The entire route took place over the open Pacific Ocean, with no chance to land. Despite that, the bird navigated thousands of miles of featureless water with pinpoint accuracy.
This incredible endurance is made possible by remarkable physiological adaptations. Before takeoff, the godwit packs on enormous fat reserves — nearly half its body weight — to fuel the flight. At the same time, many of its internal organs, including parts of the digestive system, temporarily shrink to lighten the load and maximize energy efficiency.
Unlike many seabirds that depend heavily on gliding, this godwit flapped continuously for the entire journey, battling shifting winds and weather systems the whole way.
Researchers at the Pūkōroro Auckland Shorebird Centre say discoveries like this are transforming our understanding of migratory birds. Their astonishing endurance, navigation skills, and energy management demonstrate biological capabilities that can match — and in some ways surpass — even the most advanced human engineering.
Coincidence? I don't think so.
For nearly 500 years, hundreds of millions of people looked at the most famous painting of God ever made, and none of them noticed what was hiding in plain sight.
Then, in 1990, a doctor looked up at the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel and realized that God is wrapped inside a human brain...
The painting is Michelangelo's Creation of Adam, finished around 1512. You know the image even if you don't know its name: God reaching out from the heavens, His finger almost touching Adam's, the spark of life about to leap across the gap.
But look at the shape around God, the swirling red cloak that holds Him and the angels aloft. For five centuries it was seen as just a billowing robe... but in 1990, a physician named Frank Lynn Meshberger published a paper in the Journal of the American Medical Association arguing that the red shroud is something else entirely: an anatomically precise cross-section of the human brain.
Once you see it, you cannot unsee it.
The outline of the cloak traces the outer curve of the brain. A fold in the fabric forms the Sylvian fissure, the deep groove that separates the brain's major lobes. The angel curled beneath God is positioned exactly where the brainstem would be, and the green scarf trailing down becomes the vertebral artery. Even the pituitary gland and the optic chiasm, where the nerves from the eyes cross, fall precisely into place.
This was not a man likely to invent such a thing by accident. Michelangelo had spent his youth secretly dissecting human corpses in a monastery in Florence, studying the body from the inside with an obsessiveness that, by one early account, exceeded that of professional anatomists...
So what did he mean by it?
Meshberger argued that the painting has been misnamed. He suggested it should be called not the Creation of Adam, but the Endowment of Adam. In the Bible, God gives Adam life. But in Michelangelo's fresco, Adam is already alive, his eyes open, his body lifted. What God is reaching across that famous gap to give him is not life. It is intellect. The divine spark of human thought itself, delivered, fittingly, from inside the very organ that produces it.
One of the most looked-at images in the history of the world may contain a message that took half a millennium to be read, hidden by a man who understood both the human body and the human soul better than almost anyone who has ever lived, and who seems to have decided to bury his deepest idea about us where only the most careful eye would ever find it...

John Lennon wrote a beautiful song about socialism.
“Imagine no possessions” he told us.
He also:
– helped write his band’s anti-tax anthem, Taxman
– incorporated his IP holdings
– moved to a lower-tax country
– fiercely protected his royalties
- drove two Rolls Royce’s and had multiple luxury homes.
– made sure even the royalty cheques for Imagine were kept safe for his estate so his family would remain wealthy in perpetuity.
If he believed it, he’d have lived it. The trouble with socialism is that even the people who love the idea won’t run the experiment on themselves.
John Lennon writing Imagine while owning two Rolls Royce Phantoms and later having a law suit to protect his royalties tells you all you need to know about socialism in practice.
It doesn’t work outside of the imagination.

Even de balans opmaken.
