This thread hits close to home, Literally. I've seen the loss of biodiversity in my home state, Maharashtra, in India and now in the of the bayous in Houston, Tx.

We can't skip over these issues indefinitely, These waters are OUR waters and we share them with the fish.

What I'm getting to is: Yes, save the reefs and lower your carbon footprint, But also be mindful of how your local agricultural systems, Urbanization and runoff will impact the beautiful little fish living right amongst us in this constant struggle for fresh water for everyone.

All over the world biodiversity hotspots are going through extinctions where biodiversity loss is extremely high. Whilst a lot of the focus goes to the mammals and herpetofauna in those areas, fish often get overlooked. These hotspots encompass freshwater systems too.

Despite the challenges they face, with the draining of their homes, constant habitat change and introduced/invasive species. These fish are beautiful and are often overlooked when it comes to intrinsic value, especially those native to their respective area.

With the constant threat of urbanization, freshwater fish face multiple pressures to change with their habitat and adapt to survive. This leads to the extirpation of many species before we can make a plan to save them.

Just like most of our oceans are unexplored, We have barely scratched the surface of when it comes to freshwater fish, with 1000s swimming right beneath our nose waiting to be discovered and described.

Freshwater biodiversity is under the same threat as reefs. Humans compete for resources more directly with freshwater species, draining their habitat for agriculture and disrupting riparian areas for urban development. Yet, these fish continue to persist alongside us.
