Dr Ebun Joseph talks about Ireland being a multicultural country that “we” have inherited, saying “we redefine it and redesign it” and “whether you like it or not, we are here.”

Here's a question: would she apply the same philosophy to Nigeria?

Nigeria has gone so far as to restrict the use of foreign models and foreign voice-over artists in domestic advertising, explicitly favouring Nigerian talent.

Yet in Ireland we're told that the country must be continually “redefined” and “redesigned”, that multiculturalism is irreversible and that “we can't go back.”

Why should demographic and cultural change be something Ireland is expected to embrace irreversibly, while measures intended to protect national participation and identity can be accepted elsewhere?

Surely the principle should be consistent.

This isn't some random person on social media. Dr Ebun Joseph was appointed by the Irish Government as Special Rapporteur on Racial Equality and Racism.

Given the importance and independence expected of that position, Irish people are perfectly entitled to ask what she means when she talks about “inheriting” Ireland and “redefining” and “redesigning” the country.

What exactly is being redesigned? Who is the “we” doing the redesigning? And what exactly does “whether you like it or not” mean?

Those are reasonable questions about statements made by someone holding an influential government-appointed position. Asking them isn't racism.

There is also an important distinction between citizenship and heritage. Naturalised and Irish-born citizens have equal citizenship rights. But citizenship, birthplace, ancestry, cultural heritage and historical inheritance are not interchangeable concepts.

Dr Joseph was born and raised in Nigeria before subsequently making Ireland her home and becoming an Irish citizen. So when she says “we have inherited this island,” I think Irish people are entitled to ask exactly what she means by inherited.

Does acquiring citizenship mean inheriting a country's historical and cultural legacy? Does citizenship confer a mandate to “redefine” and “redesign” that country? And who gets to decide what that redesign looks like?

Citizenship unquestionably gives her a voice in Ireland's future. It does not give her or anybody else an unquestionable mandate to redesign Ireland.

And if Dr Joseph believes countries should be fundamentally “redefined” and “redesigned,” I would genuinely like to know whether she advocates the same transformation for Nigeria.

I profoundly disagree with her vision for Ireland. Ireland's culture, history and national identity are not defects requiring redesign, and Irish people are entitled to defend and preserve them while treating citizens of every background equally.

Nobody gets to tell the Irish people that their country's transformation is inevitable “whether you like it or not.” Ireland's future belongs to its citizens collectively, and it is theirs to decide democratically.

For the avoidance of doubt Ebun Joseph is not Irish she will never be Irish She is Nigerian.

Maybe its time she goes home and sorts out her own country rather than interfering in Ireland which up to now has been perfectly fine.
