Tillya Tepe: The Ancient Treasure of #Bactria

For nearly two thousand years, conquerors and kings searched for this great treasure of the ancient world. It was eventually discovered in northern #Afghanistan, near Sheberghan, the capital of Jowzjan Province, by the renowned Soviet archaeologist Victor Ivanovich Sarianidi (1929–2013) after extensive archaeological investigations.

Under his leadership, Afghan and Soviet archaeologists conducted excavations at #TillyaTepe in 1978. As a result, nearly 20,000 gold artifacts were recovered from seven burial tombs. This extraordinary treasure, one of the most valuable archaeological discoveries of the twentieth century, has been dated to approximately the 1st century BCE and the #Kushan period.

The collection includes gold coins, jewelry inlaid with precious stones, pendants, belts, crowns, medallions, swords and daggers, ivory objects, and figurines depicting mythical creatures such as dragons. These artifacts reflect the rich cultural exchanges that once flourished along the ancient #SilkRoads and demonstrate the remarkable craftsmanship of the peoples of ancient Bactria.

In 1989, following a confidential directive issued by the former President of Afghanistan, Dr. Mohammad Najibullah, the Tillya Tepe treasure was transferred from the National Museum in Kabul to secure vaults within the Presidential Palace and the Central Bank due to security concerns. This priceless cultural heritage and enduring symbol of #AfghanHeritage and Afghanistan’s documented history has remained preserved to the present day.

Lakki Marwat, Pakhtunkhwa — Tomb of Khan Zaman Niazi

Khan Zaman Niazi was appointed as the chief of the Niazi tribe in the 18th century by Ahmad Shah Abdali. He accompanied the Afghan ruler on multiple campaigns into India and later was entrusted with the administration of Bannu and its surrounding regions—from Bannu to Mianwali.

His descendants remain spread across Pakhtunkhwa and beyond. Among the most well-known figures from this lineage is Attaullah Khan Esakhelvi.

At that time, Waziristan was part of Afghanistan.

Malik Angoor Khan, a Waziristani tribal leader, held a first-class (most prestigious political) royal passport in 1954.

The late Haji Angoor Khan and his family were among the anti-British Waziristani figures during the Third Anglo-Afghan War, and Waziristan’s Angoor Adda is named after him.

He belonged to the Baramel tribe and the Yargul Khel of the Wazirs and was the leader of the tribal militia. During the reign of the late Nadir Khan, he was granted a monthly salary of 4,000 Afghanis and leadership over the civil division. Mohammad Zahir Khan sent all these tribal leaders on Hajj at his own expense.

The late Angoor Khan passed away in 1957 at the age of 71 and was buried in Waziristan.

This passport is written in French and Pashto.
