I'm starting to understand why businesses just recycle their spinning HDD's instead of secure wiping them to sell. It takes 80+ hours to secure wipe a single 1TB 5400 RPM drive using USB 2.0 to SATA and 8 hours with a USB 3.0 to SATA hitting drives R/W limits. Not a fast process!

@danwat1234 Most of the 12TB drives can get 200MB+/sec while these old 1TB drives I have cap out at around 80MB a sec. Right now it’s taking about 6 hours per pass for 1TB and 10 hours for my 2TB drives. Right now I’m doing 1 random pass since 3 pass just takes way too freaking long.

If you ever need to secure wipe media (HDD, SSD, USB, etc) I highly recommend sdelete.exe written by Mark Russinovich of SysInternals (before MS purchased his soul). It's absolutely free to use and included with the rest of the SysInternals toolset @ https://t.co/YRdioLAgnz

I believe your motherboard has to support SATA Hot Swap for this to work. Otherwise you have to reboot for the new drive to be recognized by UEFI on boot. I remember having this problem with my external enclosures with SATA backplanes. Sadly, it doesn’t solve the speed issue since USB 3.0 already handles 4x my old drives actual speed. 🤣

@MakeItWithCal So long as the dump leaves the drive physically connected then I'll be okay, but if it causes the drive to disappear from the bus then it will take the other with it sadly. This is just a bad design, but I needed something cheap and next good option was like 3x the cost.
