At today's Houston City Council meeting, Gloria Zenteno spoke about the FY27 city budget, highlighting the ongoing underfunding of BARC compared to animal services departments in other major Texas cities. Big thanks to CM Sallie Alcorn for the positive feedback!
We didn't want May to end without talking about the fact it's National Pet Month! Our pets bring so much joy and unconditional love into our lives. From promoting responsible pet ownership to supporting local rescue efforts, let's make sure we give them as much as they give us.
We’re looking for a Volunteer Coordinator to join the team. From organizing event volunteers to being the primary contact for our supporters, this role is essential to keeping our programs running smoothly.

We didn’t want National Volunteer Week to end without sending a massive shout-out to our volunteers! Thank you past, present and future volunteers for keeping our mission moving forward and for being there for us and for the animals!
We loved attending the Avance Houston "Inspiring Dreams" luncheon! The best part was seeing the alumni on the stage sharing their journeys to college and a successful career. Huge congrats to Vicki Luna-Lerma with H-E-B and Christina Morales for their well-deserved recognition.
Barrio Dogs' founder Gloria Zenteno participated in a Union Pacific 5th Ward community meeting yesterday and shared testimony on the impact of the Community Ties grant on our work. Thank you to Richard Zientek and the Union Pacific team for hosting such a productive event!
Our Neighborhood Advocates program connects residents with the resources they need to speak up for animals. Pictured here is Gloria Zenteno talking about the program at a recent Montie Beach Civic Club meeting. For more info about the program, contact [email protected].
Our Spring Fixit was a big success! We signed up 115 pets to receive free spay/neuter, vaccinations, and microchips. Thank you to CM Joaquin Martinez and PetSet for their support for this event. Thank you also to the Houston Humane Society for providing free pet food.
We are thrilled to spotlight the Milby Student Peace Club, who are currently high school ambassadors for Barrio Dogs. When we shared a plea for pet essentials, it touched the hearts of these young leaders. They didn’t just notice the need, they took action! Many thanks to them!
Today April 4th is #WorldStrayAnimalsDay, a global day of awareness for the millions of domestic animals lost, abandoned or born on the streets.
We see this crisis firsthand everyday. We work to break the cycle through: youth education, spay/neuter access & community advocacy.

Behind the scenes, it’s team meetings like these that keep the work moving forward. We come together regularly to listen, problem-solve, and stay grounded in our mission so that we may serve our community and improve the lives of animals who depend on us.
We had a busy Saturday morning at CM Mario Castillo's District H town hall where we able to register nearly 40 pets for free spay neuter services. We are proud to partner with CM Castillo to offer District H residents essential vet services they might not otherwise afford.
