“Someone with a 1-hr car commute needs to earn 40% more to be as happy as someone with a short walk to work. On the other hand, if someone shifts from a long commute to a walk, their happiness increases as much as if they’d fallen in love.” #CityMakingMath

Green Party hopefully that lawsuit against Green Party government ministers' law will ensure Green Party policy is implemented.
I guess they're playing senior hurling now!
What is it called when something discovered 30 years ago, theorised about 20 years ago and fully described 10 years ago is suddenly thrown up as a new mystery to put off taking action on an existential threat?
I'm sure there must be a name for that kind of thing...
"Something strange is happening in the Pacific and we must find out why...Unexpectedly, the eastern Pacific Ocean is cooling. If this 'cold tongue' continues, it could reduce greenhouse gas warming by 30 per cent....FOR years, climate models have predicted that as greenhouse gas emissions rise, ocean waters will warm. For the most part, they have been correct. Yet in a patch of the Pacific Ocean, the opposite is happening. Stretching west from the coast of Ecuador for thousands of kilometres lies a tentacle of water that has been cooling for the past 30 years. Why is this swathe of the eastern Pacific defying our predictions? Welcome to the mystery of the cold tongue. This isn’t just an academic puzzle. [Pedro DiNezio](https://t.co/lRXuEpZ9Y0) at the University of Colorado Boulder calls it 'the most important unanswered question in climate science'. The trouble is that not knowing why this cooling is happening means we also don’t know when it will stop, or whether it will suddenly flip over into [warming](https://t.co/bj9HafMao8). This has global implications. The future of the cold tongue could determine whether [California is gripped by permanent drought](https://t.co/ZTF9KVeieW) or Australia by ever-deadlier wildfires. It influences the intensity of monsoon season in India and the chances of famine in the Horn of Africa........Some, including Battisti, think the drivers of Pacific cooling – the melting Antarctic ice, for example – are here to stay, making this a trend that is likely to linger. That could help to mitigate the warming effect of excess greenhouse gas emissions over the coming decades. It would also reduce the destructive power of El Niño. 'How strong El Niño events will be in the future depends a lot on how the long-term warming trends in the eastern Pacific turn out,' says Stuecker......However, some researchers think climate models will be proved right in the long run – that the basic physics of pumping vast volumes of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere means the eastern Pacific will eventually 'flip' back to a warming state. When this reversal might happen is another matter: some say it could be in 20 years, others put it nearer to 100".

The cruelty and deceit of Fine Gael needs to be repaid in spades. They shredded the social contract and infantilised a generation. There’ll be at least 2 elections next year. Pls vote. #VoteLeftTransferLeft and get them out. #SocietyAboveEconomy
People mocking Minister @Paschald for saying people that people should move their money offshore are wrong. Sure aren’t all the good and great of Ireland named in the Panama and Paradise Papers.

Warning, it takes about 12 minutes just to scroll.
Why are we putting public money into bailing out private developers when it could be put into a national public home building agency-to develop a permanent public capacity to deliver social & affordable housing? This is about bailing out the market not providing affordable homes
In FOI requests released to me & published in the @irishdailymail today they confirm that the Minister for Health did not formally meet with development Board overseeing the Children’s hospital for all of 2022 and for the first quarter of 2023. An incredible hands off approach.
A €308 million bailout for the Irish timber industry is not climate action. Nor does it support a sustainable rural economy. This is straightforward greenwashing, and is damaging to confidence that the government is interested in any real nature restoration or decarbonisation.
I actually find no contradiction in affirming the right to protest, and simultaneously not allowing for staff or library users to be harassed.
This isn’t even a stretch.
@EPPGroup yeah, right @EPPGroup let's wait until we get it perfectly right so that all the farmers, foresters and fishers are royally screwed by climate change.
Sure, if that's what you want?

Tomorrow will mark the deadline compelling the UN-affiliated International Seabed Authority to complete regulations on deep-sea mining, which seem far from ready.
In our latest issue, we talk about how unregulated deep-sea mining puts oceans at risk 👇

Get Brendan O'Connor off the air. A quarter of a million euros a year from the taxpayer and it's not even his main job. Terrified to let people talk. Interrupting by reflex. Pathetically pandering to his bosses. His duty should be to the underlings in #RTEgate, not the overlords.
