West Mersea, Essex aerial view.
Sitting on the western edge of Mersea Island, West Mersea is one of England’s best-known sailing communities and the main settlement on Britain’s most easterly inhabited island. Connected to the mainland only by the ancient causeway known as The Strood, the island has been occupied since Roman times and was an important centre for fishing and oyster harvesting for centuries.
The harbour seen here opens into the Blackwater Estuary, famous for its traditional Thames sailing barges, mudflats rich in birdlife and some of the finest native oysters in Britain. The local oyster industry dates back at least to Roman occupation nearly 2,000 years ago, with the celebrated Colchester Native Oyster helping build the town’s prosperity. Today, West Mersea remains a thriving centre for sailing, boatbuilding and maritime life on the Essex coast.

So, it's come to this after more than a decade of warnings and no action taken by any Government or Whitehall.
This pretty much sums up the state of our UK armed forces in general, politicians (of all parties) milked the 'Cold War Dividend' far too long.
