Out of respect for his family and those closest to him, I wanted to wait a bit before speaking on the passing of @wesruckerTBA today.
Wes began his career at the Times Free Press and it was obvious early on how talented he was, which is why he was hired away to move to Knoxville and cover the Vols. Once there, he quickly proved himself to be one of the best on that beat as well.
Whenever @DavidSPaschall and I would show up for games, Wes would always joke about being “Team TFP forever, boys!”
But what I will remember most is that our press box conversations were almost always about family, not sports. Wes loved his wife and little boy unashamedly out loud. And he already loved his soon-to-be-born baby girl the same. Any time he gave updates on Hank’s struggles through numerous surgeries, Wes would then turn and joke, “so how’s life as a grandpa, old man?”
Because he was so gifted with expressing his unbiased opinion in story form, some Vols fans enjoyed tweeting their disagreements with him. I remember telling him once, “Wes, I think most of those folks would like you if they actually knew you.” To which he smirked and said, “Well, hopefully that never happens. What’d be the fun in that?”
On behalf of the Times Free Press sports department, please keep Wes’ family in prayer. RIP to a really talented journalist, but an even better family man and human being. Team TFP forever friend.
Tell someone close that you love them today.
Absolutely devastating news so close to home. Wes was an amazing journalist, a Vol through and through, and above all a devoted family man.
We lost a genuinely good man far too soon. May his soul rest for eternity and his family find comfort in the love and prayers that surround them during this difficult time.
Vols OC Joey Halzle: That's been the entire focus of the offseason. When teams are playing really soft coverage, dropping eight, how do we still generate explosive plays? We've made some changes.

I just looked it up: there are 6,311 active football players in the NCAA Transfer Portal at this moment.
Of that total number:
- 2,073 players are from FBS schools
- 1,639 players are from FCS schools
1) There aren’t 6,311 spots - much less 6,311 scholarships.
2) That doesn’t count JUCO/NAIA guys looking for a home.
3) There are thousands of D2 and D3 guys trying to move up.
Recruits, the music will stop and the ride will end - when it does, make sure you’re playing football and not just collecting graphics and offers.
