Neither is fighting for Alberta's interests. They're fighting for their own.

And when you ask them one simple question:

What tangible benefit does Alberta receive by remaining in Canada? they never have an answer.

Instead, we get the same empty slogans.

"Unity."

"We're stronger together."

"Canada is better together."

Those aren't benefits. They're talking points.

The reality is the clearest beneficiaries of Alberta remaining in Canada are the rest of Canada and Canada's political elite, not Albertans.

the true magic that underpins this system is the thing that most people understand least: price.

price is the signaling mechanism this system uses. high prices signal unmet demand and attract supply. low prices show oversupply or lack of demand (basically the same thing) an curtail production. the search for equilibrium at the marginal cost of the marginal producer is, quite literally, the search for the maximization of demand satiation and pareto optimal allocation. should we make another pair of shoes or another 5 pounds of prime rib eye? only price can tell you.

price drives wealth. stock prices/company values drive access to capital. the price of money determines access to lending. it's all prices. it's the beating heart of free trade and production and consumption possibility frontiers.

this is why all subsidy, tarriff, specific tax (piguovian or otherwise) is all so damaging. it's all huge deadweight loss not just because of the imposition itself, but because of the way it cascades through and breaks the optimization function. even "common sense" rules like "no gouging in a crisis" impeded the flow of goods. why divert bottles of water and gallons of gasoline to a disrupted zone, often that higher costs, if there is no reward?

the cure for high prices is high prices. they attract supply.

high valuations for companies is the signal to give more resources to that founder because they are good at using them.

but politics is the opposite. it grabs capital by force and allocates it without regard to return.

watch NYC as the rent control experiment fails. again.

of all the things we need to stop messing with, price is top of the list. there is no such thing as a free economy with price controls.

Stalin’s communist Five Year Plan was a calculated campaign to break the Kazakhs.

Under orders from Moscow, the regime launched forced collectivization on a nomadic people who had lived by their herds for centuries. They seized livestock on a massive scale, pushed sedentarization, and imposed collective farms that made no sense on the steppe, all while extracting grain to feed the cities and fuel Stalin’s industrial fantasies.
