I was greeted by a barista who did not make eye contact. She wore dark sunglasses and headphones. I felt ignored. Earlier I saw a couple signing to each other. They kept eye contact and watched faces. Their focus showed they chose to be there. Both moments felt different.
One showed distance. The other showed attention. Presence matters in how we treat others. Sign language uses the face and eyes for meaning. You see attention in the face. You see choice in the focus. When you choose to be present you show respect. Look up. Make eye contact.
