@TheDejaKing What exactly is mean-spirited in this review? Besides an obvious bias in the low rating. Holding album criticism to the professional standards of hard news journalism is ridiculous hair splitting. To say the kernels of truth in this are less meaningful bc team breezy is hurt 😂
@Venom_Doc_@MOZZIEMUTANT@Jonas_Ceika Calling that a “contribution” is just an idiot’s way to claim the result while denying the authorship. If Europe could’ve made jazz or blues on its own, it would’ve. You’re just uncomfortable admitting that, you have to reduce invention to contribution because YOU’re the half-wit
@Venom_Doc_@MOZZIEMUTANT@Jonas_Ceika This “post slavery music” you’re talking about wasn’t a hand-me-down situation. Using European instruments doesn’t make the music European any more than writing in English makes an idea British. Swing, blues tonality, improvisation, and groove are not just garnishes.
When simulation becomes the norm, it weakens the human capacity for discernment. As a result, our social bonds close in upon themselves, forming self-referential circuits that no longer expose us to reality. We thus come to live within bubbles, impermeable to one another. Feeling threatened by anyone who is different, we grow unaccustomed to encounter and dialogue. In this way, polarization, conflict, fear and violence spread. What is at stake is not merely the risk of error, but a transformation in our very relationship with truth.
@carlterver One of my favorite nonfiction writers, Mike Davis, was a long haul truck driver and butcher for most of his life before entering academia and I think that’s why he cuts through the others for me
@twum_ble This is a helpful reframing bc my current skew is “it’s self-aggrandizing to think people care about you that much” and I can see how that could be avoidance, rather than accepting and confronting people’s perceptions of you, good or bad
