Ideas at the bar, experts at the mic, you in the conversation—
Intellectual salon where experts/educators give TED-style lectures in bars/cafes over drinks
Some gatherings just feel like the safe space you didn’t know you needed, and this one was it.
I paid for and attended @BartimeDebrief’s June edition on Tuesday, and it was worth every dime.
The topic discussed was “Selling to Nigerians: Why do we buy stories, not products? and the speaker, Obianuju Akinlolu, broke it down well.
I looked forward to the session and wasn’t disappointed.
Every brand has a story to tell, whether fictional, non-fictional, or technical.
What sets you apart from others is your story. People rarely buy products because of features alone, they buy what those products represent.
More importantly, stories reduce uncertainty. Before people buy from you, they want to know if they can trust you.
That’s why visibility and trust are key. Storytelling helps you build both.
Obianuju went ahead to share instances of how she made huge sales for Sterling Bank, and it all boiled down to the story she crafted for the brand.
If you’re selling anything, stop trying to say things like, “buy from me” all the time. It’s vague, and vague doesn’t sell.
Start telling stories. Stories like your brand’s behind the scenes, your background, how you got the idea, your day-to-day activities, and so on.
Your vulnerability is what attracts people to you because it helps build trust.
I left thinking about how none of this was really about selling but about identity. The brands that win are the ones whose story gives people somewhere to see themselves.
That’s the part nobody says out loud, and it’s the part I can’t stop thinking about. It’s proof that everything is marketing.
Kudos to the organizers for the reminder.
See you in the next edition!
