Luca Van Boven suffered two broken ribs and a collapsed lung because of the nasty crash during stage 7 of La Vuelta, which he courageously managed to finish.

Luca will remain in hospital overnight for further observation and will unfortunately not start tomorrow. He will continue to be closely monitored.

We are sad to lose a precious teammate and such positive personality around the team. We wish Luca lots of strength and a speedy recovery ❤️‍🩹

After three consecutive sprint stages, Stage 4 finally brings the first real mountain test of the race.

The riders will tackle the famous climb to Karpacz, 7 km at 6.2%. While it's a long ascent, it's not exceptionally steep and is more of a steady climbing effort than a brutal mountain pass. After the summit, the route descends before finishing on a short but very demanding climb of 1.1 km at 8.3%. That final ramp is steep enough to make the decisive selection and should determine the stage winner.

My pick for the stage win is Jan Christen, who is also my favourite for the overall classification. For him, the key will be timing his attack correctly. That's often been his biggest weakness he sometimes attacks at the wrong moment. If he gets his tactics right, though, I think he has everything it takes to win this stage.

Santiago Buitrago is another major contender. He's had an unlucky season, but if he's back in good form, this finish suits him extremely well. His punch on short, steep climbs makes him a serious threat.

Finn Fisher-Black is another rider to watch. The finish might have suited him slightly better if the stage had ended at the top of the Karpacz climb rather than on the final steep ramp, but he still has the qualities to fight for victory.

Christian Scaroni is also perfectly suited to this type of terrain. He's repeatedly shown how strong he is on explosive uphill finishes and should be among the main contenders.

Alexander Vlasov is another rider capable of delivering a strong performance on this kind of finish.

Louis Barré is also worth mentioning after his impressive ride in San Sebastián. If he carries that form into Poland, he could be a dangerous outsider.

Keep an eye on Adrien Boichis as well. Coming from a mountain biking background, he has plenty of punch and is well suited to these short, explosive uphill finishes.

Finally, there's João Almeida. This isn't the ideal climb for him, as he generally excels on longer and steeper ascents. Although the climb to Karpacz is reasonably long, it's not especially difficult. Even so, the most important thing will be to see him remain competitive, and if he stays with the favourites, he'll still have every chance of fighting for a strong result.
