The history of Butter Pecan Ice Cream
I just saw a post that said “Who is keeping butter pecan ice cream in business?” And thought it might be a good time for a moment in Black History.
Butter pecan ice cream was invented because black ppl were denied vanilla ice cream (except with a special coupon only to be used on July 4th) because it was seen as “pure” and for white ppl only, during slavery and after through the Jim Crow segregation era.
They were limited to only be able to purchase and eat chocolate ice cream throughout the year. Mind you, it was a young black enslaved man by the name of Edmund Albius who revolutionized the cultivation of vanilla to be used in the ice cream in the first place. 😏 So what did black ppl do? We added, pecans, and butter to the vanilla ice cream so they would have variety and it was no longer “pure white”. We are certainly an innovative people. Thus the love affair of black ppl and butter pecan ice cream.
So while you are celebrating Black History 365, make sure you add butter pecan ice cream to the list, as well as your red velvet cake (the red color is symbolic to the blood shed of those who lost their lives while enslaved). #didyouknowfacts
