Accidentally taught my nephew the wrong name for seagulls when he was four and didn't realize until his teacher called my sister to ask why he kept insisting they were called "beach chickens" during their unit on coastal wildlife. Apparently he got into a full argument with another kid about it and refused to back down because "my uncle works with animals" (I'm a veterinarian, which technically made it worse). My sister made me call him and admit I'd been wrong. He's nine now and still brings it up at family dinners. Last Thanksgiving he introduced me to his friend as "the uncle who doesn't know what birds are called." I deserve this.

I have a great relationship with my teens because I lead with curiosity and respect.

If you don't have a good relationship with your big kids, it's 100% your fault. But you can probably fix it.

I recommend following this account because he explains how our behavior teaches kids stuff we don't actually want to teach them. Very useful insight about how to be a strong parent who doesn't get walked all over yet one who creates strong children who don't get walked all over and who don't walk all over anyone.
