The Powell Street cable car turnaround is getting a major upgrade. Today I signed legislation accepting a $14.5 million grant to help transform this iconic spot into a world-class gateway for everyone who comes to San Francisco.
The redesign includes new and widened sidewalks, fresh landscaping, and updated cable car stops. There will be ample sidewalk space for restaurants and cafes to set up tables and chairs. Art nouveau-inspired hanging lanterns—a nod to the area’s historic architecture—will line the corridor, and the showstopper in the redesign will be a giant overhead starburst chandelier suspended above the cable car turnaround at Market and Powell streets.
When downtown thrives, every neighborhood benefits. Thank you to the Downtown Development Corporation and our private partners who are helping strengthen this corridor as a signature destination. Construction is anticipated to start by fall 2026, with substantial completion expected in 2027.
Every day, thousands of people begin their San Francisco experience at the Powell Street cable car turnaround. A stronger downtown means more jobs, more visitors supporting local businesses, and more revenue to fund the services San Franciscans rely on. Downtown is coming back, and we are just getting started. Let’s go, San Francisco!
welcome to san francisco. our government is run by corporate right-wing democrats and our left wing gets absolutely nothing done, earning us the title of communist shithole
