This Women's month, we're launching the #ScalesofChange campaign in partnership with @HerInternet.
The campaign highlights & addresses TFGBV, because digital spaces should be safe for everyone including women & girls.
Stay tuned for what we'll be unpacking throughout the month.
We were honoured to be part of the panel discussion on Privacy and Protection in the Digital World at the @USEmbassyUganda, where we explored the growing challenges around data privacy, AI, digital literacy, online safety, and the balance between protection and freedom in digital spaces.
As technology continues to shape how we live, work, and connect, conversations around privacy, digital rights, and responsible technology have never been more important.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to such an important and timely discussion.

NAKIGUDDE ’s experience on Deepfake Video / AI Abuse & Platform Standards
Nakigudde woke up to a deepfake of her face already in her brand partners' inboxes. Three sponsors were suspended. The video had been live for days.
The original video was real. The voice and the words were a lie.
AI is being weaponized against women's livelihoods, and platforms must be held to account.
📌 Take Action:
✅ Learn to spot deepfakes: look for mismatched lips, unnatural blinking, and weird edges around the face and hair
✅ If a deepfake of you is circulating: report it immediately as non-consensual synthetic media take screenshots as evidence first
✅ Demand platforms auto-watermark or immediately take down AI-generated non-consensual content it must be a standard, not an option
✅ Share Nakigudde's digital literacy tips with your network knowledge is the first line of defence

NALONGO’s experience on Doxxing/ Community Safety Planning
She came out on her own terms. Within days, her home address, her children's school, her employer, and her family members' names were published online.
Doxxing is not just harassment. It is a tool of political suppression designed to make you disappear.
Nalongo chose differently: community routes, secured communications, legal documentation. Then she posted not about the attack, but about the issue she was targeted for.
📌Take Action:
✅If you or someone you know is doxxed: do NOT engage with the content report and document immediately
✅Audit your digital footprint: search your own name and remove any personal information that is publicly accessible
✅Contact @wougnet to develop a community safety plan routes, communications, and emergency contacts
✅ Doxxing tor the purpose of intimidating activists may constitute a criminal offence under Uganda's
Computer Misuse Act
✅Report to police and document the pattern

SOFIA ’s experience on Digital Stalking / Institutional Intimidation
Someone referenced the coffee shop she visited that morning. They had been tracking her location not randomly, but as a calculated attempt to intimidate a human rights lawyer into silence.
Sofia secured her devices, varied her routes, mobilised her colleagues, and submitted a legal reform brief naming digital stalking as a tool of intimidation against human rights defenders.
What was meant to frighten her became a case for systemic change.
📌 Take Action:
✅ If you receive messages that reference your real-time location or movements: treat this as a serious threat document and report immediately
✅ Secure your devices now: change passwords, enable 2FA, revoke unnecessary location permissions on all apps
✅ Human rights defenders facing digital stalking can access specialist support contact @wougnet for referrals
✅ Advocate for legal frameworks that explicitly recognise digital stalking as a form of intimidation against defenders share Section 4.2 and demand it becomes law

AWILA 's experience on Sextortion / Reporting
& Reclaiming Your Voice
A fake brand manager. Weeks of trust-building. Then threats.
Awila didn't pay. She documented it. She reported. Multiple accounts sharing her images were suspended.
Then she recorded a message and 200,000 people heard it.
Sextortion is not your shame. The blame belongs entirely to the perpetrator.
📌Take Action:
✅If you are being threatened: do NOT pay. Paying rarely stops the abuse and often escalates it
✅Screenshot all messages and account
IDs before blocking. This is your evidence
✅Report to the Uganda Police Cybercrime Unit and submit account details for takedown requests
✅ Reach out to @wougnet, they can connect you with trained digital safety responders and legal support. You can report anonymously. You do not have to face this alone.

We showcased the comic strip "Scales of Change" at #DRIF26, turning statistics into stories that hit home. Building inclusive & resilient digital futures starts with making the numbers real. The road to digital resilience is still long but we've embarked on the journey.
BUKIRWA’s experience on Coordinated Mass Reporting / Platform Accountability
They didn't harass Bukirwa with words. They used the platform's own reporting system with hundreds of coordinated false reports until her account was automatically suspended.
Years of work. Her entire community. Gone overnight.
This isn't a glitch. It's a weapon. And platforms need to close the gap.
📌 Take Action:
✅ If your account is wrongly suspended: file an appeal immediately document the coordinated nature of the attack in your submission
✅ Screenshot and preserve all evidence of coordinated reporting before the suspension
✅ Contact @wougnet to connect you with civil society support for platform appeals
✅ Add your voice to the call for platform policy reform, tag @Meta , @X, @TikTokComms and demand abuse-resistant moderation systems

SARAH’s experience on Intimate Partner Surveillance / Device Security
Spyware was installed without Sarah’s knowledge. The spyware was used to track her location, monitor her messages and control her movements using her own phone.
Sarah found the app. She documented the tracker in her car. She reported that she wasn't alone.
🚫Covert digital surveillance by a partner is abuse. It has a name, and it has a remedy.
📌 Take Action:
✅ Run a free device security check, ask @wougnet about digital safety audits available in your area
✅ Enable 2FA on all accounts today
✅Turn off real-time location sharing
✅ If you suspect spyware, document everything before removing it because it is evidence
✅ Report intimate partner digital surveillance to police
For the past weeks, you’ve witnessed t/ digital threats women face, seen t/ justice they deserve & now, it’s time to focus on action required to get us there.
We are proud to partner w/ @wougnet for t/third phase of this campaign because
awareness without action is not enough.
NANKYA’s experience on non-consensual distribution of intimate Images or videos / Legislative Action
They tried to use Nankya’s photos to silence her before the vote. She passed the motion anyway, then walked straight to the drafting table.
Nankya didn't just survive the attack. She turned it into law.
Image-based abuse is real. It's political, and it's being used to push women out of power. But women in power are fighting back, and so can you.
📌 Take Action:
✅ If you've experienced non-consensual sharing of intimate images, report to the Uganda Police Cybercrime Unit: +256 414 259 795
✅ Contact @wougnet for referrals to legal aid and digital safety support

Seven women. Seven forms of digital violence. One demand: that it stops.
Throughout March 2026, @baseiota, together with other partners @femtechXlaw , @HerInternet told the stories of Nankya, Bukirwa, Nakigudde, Nalongo, Sarah, Awila, and Sofia seven fictional women whose experiences reflect a very real crisis facing women online in Uganda and across East Africa.
Their stories named spyware, deepfakes, doxxing, sextortion, coordinated harassment, non-consensual image sharing, and digital stalking for what they are: not edge cases, not accidents, acts of gender-based violence, carried out through technology, with near-total impunity.
🚨Scales of Change is not just a storytelling campaign. It is a call to action.
WOUGNET will take on Phase 3 which is the call to Action. Each story now closes with a pathway, something you can do, report, demand, or share. Because visibility is only the first act of justice. The second is action.
They tried to rewrite her truth with a deepfake.
She gathered evidence, reported, and spoke out Experts verified the lie. The truth went public
Step by step, she reclaimed her name.
Disinformation can spread fast— but so can truth
#ScalesOfChange#ForAllWomenAndGirls#EndTFGBV
They exposed her life—but she fought back. She documented theabuse, reported it, and pushed for action Investigations followed. A takedown was ordered
Step bystep, her safety was restored
Doxxing is violence And justice is possible
#ScalesOfChange#ForAllWomenAndGirls#EndTFGBV
They didn’t just target her—they exposed her life.
Her home. Her children. Her safety.
Leaked. Shared. Weaponized.
Now the calls won’t stop. The fear follows her home.
This is doxxing.
And it turns private lives into public danger.
#ScalesOfChange#ForAllWomenAndGirls#EndTFGBV
They tried to drown her out.
She built solidarity, documented every attack, and took control of her digital space. Then she reported—with evidence.
The system isn’t perfect. But she kept going.
Resilience is her strategy.
#ScalesOfChange#ForAllWomenAndGirls#EndTFGBV
“Was the coffee delicious?”
Then another And another
Someone was watching. Tracking. Turning her everyday routine into fear
Sofia ran—but the threat followed
This is cyberstalking And it steals more than privacy—it steals safety.
