In 1998, Prof. Dora Akunyili was the South-east Zonal Secretary of the Petroleum Trust Fund [PTF].
Her doctors diagnosed her of a cancer tumor growing rapidly in her breast, and she had to travel to the United States for a surgery.
General M Buhari who was the PTF chairman approved the sum of £17,100 for her medical expenses with £12000 deposited directly to the hospital while £5100 was given to her as living and medication expenses.
When she got there, the doctors over there found out it was a minor tumor which could be treated without surgery, and so the surgery was cancelled and she was refunded directly by the hospital.
She came back to Nigeria, and instead of keeping the money, she did what no Current Nigerian Politician would do. She returned the £12,000 to PTF and wrote a letter thanking Gen. Buhari, while explaining that she didn't need the money.
In the letter from late Dora to Gen Buhari, she explains that she was returning £12,000 of the £17,100 because doctors decided surgery was not needed.
That act of integrity is one of a kind, and that was part of what determined her position as the NAFDAC boss.
I can assure you that in the current Nigeria, these rogues in power would have seized that money and used £1k for thanksgiving for a successful surgery.
Point to note is that the £12k was enough to buy a choicy house in Ikoyi, in those days, but she refused to do any of that.

ICAN loves asking questions on IAS 36 - Impairment of Assets and I thought I should let you know a little about it.
Impairment is when the recoverable amount of an asset is greater than its carrying amount. As a curious mind, you would ask what is the RECOVERABLE AMOUNT OR HOW IS IT DETERMINED?
The recoverable amount is the higher of an asset's FAIR VALUE LESS COST TO SELL & ITS' VALUE-IN-USE.
Let me give you a few seconds to process this.
So impairment is when
RECOVERABLE AMOUNT < CARRYING AMOUNT;
and
RECOVERABLE AMOUNT =
the higher of
1) Fair Value less Cost to Sell; &
2) Value in Use.
Now you have these key terms, but do you know what it means?
- Fair Value LESS Cost to Sell is the estimated price an asset could be sold for in an orderly transaction between knowledgeable, willing parties, minus the costs associated with the sale, such as brokerage fees or legal expenses.
- Value in Use is the present value of the future cash flows that an entity expects to derive from the continued use and eventual disposal of the asset.
Don't worry, the definition of terms are for your own understanding.
Next question, how is value-in-use determined?
Since it is the present value of future cash flow, then DCF technique applies.
The big question is how do you account for impairment loss?
You can do that in three easy steps:
1 - establish whether there is an indication of impairment
2 - If there is, assess the recoverable amount
3 - Write down the affected asset.
Next time, I will be taking about Cash Generating Unit and Impairment of Assets.
See you then.
My only advice to women on this cooking issue is to start how you want to continue. Can’t start the relationship churning out more food daily than a buka then try to stop after. It’s better he knows you’re a lazy goat from the start 👍🏾
Now that you have finished NYSC, if you get a job paying N100K in Lagos or Abuja take it. Start from somewhere, gain real life experience, develop fantastic employability skills, and brand yourself excellently. After a while, aim higher and apply for better jobs. Don’t get stuck!
It’s not the feeling of fear, it’s the feeling of wanting to do better.
