ELON MUSK COMPARED THE FUTURE GAP BETWEEN HUMANS AND AI TO THE GAP BETWEEN HUMANS AND CHIMPANZEES. THEN HE SAID HE'S FINE WITH IT.

In an interview with The Economist, recorded at Giga Texas, Musk said AI will likely exceed the combined intelligence of every human on Earth within about five years. His exact words: "There really won't be anything that AI can't do better than humans, apart from being human, perhaps." Asked whether humans would still control AI in ten years, his answer was blunt: probably not. "It's hard to imagine that the chimpanzee would be in charge."

His stated timeline, laid out in the same interview: humanity out-thought within five years, meaningful human control gone within ten, and by 2036, he says, money itself may stop mattering in any conventional sense.

I checked this against his own track record before writing this, and it's worth knowing. Musk has repeatedly moved this same goalpost. In 2024 he said "smartest human" by 2025. Earlier he'd said 2029 for AGI, then at Davos 2026 he said 2030-2031 for combined human intelligence. This latest Economist interview compresses that to roughly five years from now — the timeline keeps getting shorter, not longer, with each version, which matters as much as any single date he's given.

Not everyone agrees with the premise itself. Meta's chief AI scientist Yann LeCun has directly disputed this class of claim, pointing out that current AI systems still can't reliably teach themselves basic physical tasks the way a 17-year-old learns to drive in 20 hours.

Musk's own philosophy on all of it now: "Let's enjoy the ride." Worth remembering he's also the one selling the robots for whatever comes next.
