More than half of people on universal credit have recently been unable to afford more food after running out, according to a survey.
Should people on universal credit get more money?
Single person will need £31,300 a year for a moderate income in retirement.
Median wage, £29,600. Majority can't save enough for retirement.
Full state pension in April will be £11,500, only 50% will receive it.
Grim future delivered by govt policies.

"If I had to work until I was 71 in my current state of health, doing the jobs available to me now, I’d be dead by 72."
Those approaching retirement age who can't yet retire would be hugely helped by a universal basic income floor.

A great video from our friends at Basic Income New Brunswick showing how basic income works to reduce poverty, while supporting working people and entrepreneurs.
Universal basic income has so many positive impacts that the cost of having it is less than the cost of not having it. See my pinned thread to learn about all the positive impacts and the lack of impacts that many fear.
The narrative that UBI will make people lazy is misguided and not reflected by trials. The freedom to choose work that suits you, to pursue education, or to take care of loved ones, isn't laziness. It's liberty.
UBI can redefine our understanding of work and worth this century.
One in four adults has less than £500 in savings.
Britons have £10000 less disposable income than in 2010.
But fat-cats are getting richer.
Can't revive economy or reduce poverty without equitable distribution of income.
Workers must vote on exec pay.

Where is the justification for letting the rich get richer while children starve and people sleep rough on the streets?
We cannot afford these obscene levels of inequality. It's our job to offer a real alternative — one that puts human need before corporate greed.
It's ironic that we cheer on billionaires amassing unimaginable wealth while millions struggle to afford basic necessities.
The narrative we're fed tells us anyone can become a billionaire, but the reality is, you're far more likely to join the ranks of the struggling than even become a millionaire.
This isn't just unfair; it's unsustainable.
We need to demand a system that values human lives over obscene wealth, one that invests in opportunity for all, not just the privileged few.
We need UBI now!
Most of the problems we face aren’t President Biden’s fault.
Most of the problems we face aren’t former President Trump’s fault.
The problems we face are the result of decades of neoliberalism and the system that enables it.
It’s bigger than simply any one candidate or party.
Do you know what your time alive is worth? More than a wage. More than a salary. Your time is priceless. You should have the freedom to decide how you spend it. Universal Basic Income isn't just about cash; it's about reclaiming your time, your life.
Demand basic income for all.
More new basic income evidence, this time from Boston where 50 people got $583 a month for 2 years.
Mental health improved for recipients and worsened for the control group.
Recipients also saw an increase in assets while the control group lost assets.
Recipients became much better prepared to handle an emergency compared to the control group. The number of families who were able to save increased by 50%, while it fell by 44% among families not receiving payments.
Families with the income were also more than twice as likely to meet their household needs each month.
Here's what one participant said:
"Receiving $583 each month was a game changer for us.
I was able to leave my second job to spend time with the kids. My husband had more time to search for a new job and he started one right away. We paid off our credit card bill. We bought a new car for me to get to work. It all added up to reduced stress and more family time for all of us. We’re saving up to buy a house and we just feel like we’re on more solid ground than ever before."
It was so successful they are already working on launching a second phase this Spring.

You've probably heard the phrase "Work smarter, not harder" but truth be told, we're currently living in a society where the ethos is "Work until you drop." This isn't progress. It's regression. Time to rise up and realize that Universal Basic Income paves the way for progress.
What happens to a society with unequal opportunities?
Economic growth suffers as a portion of the population lacks resources, hindering progress.
This stagnation creates social unrest as inequality breeds frustration, potentially leading to instability.
Additionally, social cohesion erodes, leading to division and undermining the common good.
UBI offers a pathway towards inclusivity and a more equitable distribution of resources that promote opportunity, empower individuals and enable shared prosperity.
A fresh hit piece against UBI that amusingly claims the evidence shows that basic income doesn't reduce poverty, and backs that claim up with the successful Finland pilot and the canceled Ontario pilot that was succeeding, and mentions zero other pilots.
