#HappyNewYear#Hopesfor2023 You can look at life from the lense of seasons
“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens:”
Ecclesiastes 3:1 NIV
And there being a time for everything under the sun.
Basic science is the foundation for tomorrow's miracles!
"In 1966, two scientists got an $80,000 grant from the U.S. government to study microbes in Yellowstone’s hot springs. They basically went around sticking slides in hot mud to eventually prove for the first time that life could exist at such high temperatures.
It sounded like obscure science for science's own sake—maybe even like a waste of taxpayer money.
But from that research, they discovered a heat-resistant enzyme that years later became the foundation of PCR (polymerase chain reaction). PCR made it possible to rapidly copy DNA—an innovation that revolutionized genetic science. Processes that were either impossible or took teams of experts months were suddenly doable in a few hours."
In 1960, Zimbabwe was 4.6x richer than Botswana.
Then Zimbabwe went full socialism: land grabs, money printing, and a series of “government knows best” policies.
Botswana embraced property rights and free markets.
By 2011, the average Motswana was 6x richer than the average Zimbabwean.
Wake up Africa!
Men lie, women lie, numbers don’t.
If you’re not learning from the past, you’re condemned to repeat it.
Dear newly minted A'Level graduates. You are going to college - congrats! Here are my thoughts based on experience & observations. You're probably going to study something that you never planned to because our education system is a pipe. Your points determine where you land
2. You will hear pple telling you that BA doesn't pay or BSc is a road to Chikwingwizha as a teacher. You will also probably go through some financial challenges as you go through your studies in this economy. If you have come from underprivileged background it may be worse
3. Take stock of your time. When I was at college that was the only time I ever had so much time kill. I am hopeful that you will have this much time too. If you don't have time create it by being efficient. Horn your computer skills - typing, spreadsheets, automating tasks etc
4. When you have created time, look for work if you can find it. Since the economy is in bad shape there may be very few after-hours work, I tend to advocate for online work. It is also time for you to experiment with friends. Find solutions that others can pay for
5. There are many opportunities that exist online that do not require extreme skills. Mundane opportunities like data entry, game testing, content production etc. At some point had 3 students who wrote for our blog at $30/article & they cld do 4 or 5 a week. Find your niche
6. Plug into international communities & volunteer. eg, If there is an open source community for something you follow, even if you are not technical join & offer to help to proof-read or write docs eg How-Tos. This is how you network with folks that can open doors for you.
7. There are more things that you shld learn as you do your first degree. Connect dots with other fields. Interact with folks from other faculties. Businesses need accountants who need lawyers, who need researchers, who need statisticians
8. Hear these pple's pain points. Ask yourself if there is something you can do to easy this pain - that cld be your biggest break. Don't be afraid to reach out with possible solutions. The world assumes we are siloed... you thrive when you defy that!
9. There are now many opportunities to expand our horizons quicker & at less cost. There are many certifications online, some of them come free. Find what you think you wld like and go for it. That will open your horizons. Learn programming if you can. That skill is essential
10. Finally, there are more IT sectors than there are degrees to study. I haven't seen a degree that teaches building apps for Roku or Tizen exclusively but it is a niche that can pay you 6 figure salary. Find something you wld want to be a domain leader & go for it
11. You have a lot of time to make mistakes and correct them. Explore as much as you can. Go on https://t.co/M2amOdasQq and go through job listings there and see what they usually ask for and start mapping where you want to go. Good luck and don't despair when things get tough!

Woke up to some good news. When Citizens Initiative started work at Masibinta Secondary School in Binga, they had 0% pass rate. We built 2 blocks in 2023 and provided text books with the help of @UNmigration. The pass rate increased to 13% that year. In 2024 it rose to 41.03%. The school is now ranked 7th out of 46 in Binga. Even ahead of Binga High School. This reinforces our belief that investing in decent infrastructure is a sure way to improve academic outcomes in our communities. To those who spared their hard-earned money to help the people of Binga, it was not in vain. You have changed lives!
Over the past 48hrs you guys retweeted this fundraiser about 4K times, we raised $600 from 24 people. This means every retweet was worth $0.15. That is how important you are all in this. We will change lives together. We need just $125 to cross $6K https://t.co/zzhyeRYe5M
When you retweet we end up raising $0.10. So even if you don't donate just by retweeting you are helping us reach people who will end up giving to the cause. Thank you

The Energy crisis can be solved by the Trash crisis. Burn the trash and generate electricity. The Recycling of Trash can solve the water crisis, use the plastic recycled to make the pipes needed to replace the 80% of cleaned water lost in damaged and old pipes.
