1/2 We are committed to building a strong network of surgeons across East Africa skilled in repairing hernia.
Through our specialised training camps, we have performed 72 over major surgeries and trained 100 resident doctors since 2016.

Roeya Training Center with Prof Mostafa Ibrahim have been at the forefront of training Gastrointestinal Endoscopy in Egypt , The Middle East and Sub-Saharan Africa over the past 10 years. Today we announce a mutual collaboration. That will advance Endoscopy training
The future of surgical training is here—and it’s immersive!
Dr. Francis Basimbe GI Surgeon, Nsambya Hospital @NsambyaHospital & Lecturer, @umu_nkozi is leading the charge in implementing Virtual Reality (VR) for surgical lectures and preoperative care.
The Study:
Using 3D cadaveric dissections in a VR environment, 8 residents from UMU/St. Francis Nsambya explored complex surgical approaches to proximal humerus fractures.
The Feedback:
📈 72% felt a significant boost in confidence.
📈 87.5% believed the skills learned were directly transferable to the OR.
📈 78% praised the realism of the simulation.
📈 85% recommended VR as a permanent fixture in medical education.
The Verdict:
VR isn't just a gadget—it’s a high-value, highly acceptable tool for the next generation of surgeons.

Prevalence and Patterns of Defects in Redo Fundoplications: A Study of Two Urban Kampala Hospitals presented by Dr. Francis Basimbe GI Surgeon, St. Francis Hospital Nsambya.
-The Challenge;
Anti-reflux surgery failure rates can reach up to 20% in certain clinical settings, necessitating a closer look at why these procedures fail and what happens during revision.
-Study Aim;
To determine the prevalence of redo fundoplications and audit surgical outcomes and intraoperative findings.
-Key Findings
Prevalence: Out of 253 fundoplications performed, the redo rate was 2.3%.
Patient Profile: Revisions were most common in female patients and those struggling with obesity.
Intraoperative Observations: Redo surgery is significantly more complex due to dense adhesions and distorted anatomy. Bleeding was identified as the most frequent complication during these procedures.
-Clinical Takeaway
Obesity remains the primary driver of recurrence. For high-risk patients, it is critical to discuss weight reduction strategies—including bariatric procedures—in conjunction with fundoplication to ensure long-term success.
-Conclusion;
Obesity is the leading factor in surgical failure. Surgeons should anticipate difficult "take-downs" and a higher risk of hemorrhage when approaching a redo case.
A legacy honored. A future challenged. 📍
It was a profound honor as Dr. Francis Basimbe (Chair of Surgery @NsambyaHospital, @umu_nkozi introduced the distinguished Prof. Francis Omaswa Director ACHEST, distinguished surgeon & academician for the Prof. Ignatius Kakande Memorial Lecture.
Prof. Omaswa shared a deeply personal tribute to the late Prof. Kakande (1942–2025), reflecting on a friendship that began at St. Mary’s College Kisubi and spanned through medical school into legendary surgical careers.
The lecture, “The Global HWF Crisis: Implications for ASOU,” served as a clarion call. Prof. Omaswa reminded us that health is not a consumptive expense, but a driver of economic growth.
From addressing the migration of our health workforce to the "Triangle that moves the mountain" (Knowledge, Social Mobilization, and Political Involvement), the message was clear: Surgeons must lead.
"Unless we collectively feel the pain and shame of our condition, we will not have the commitment to take action."
Rest in Power, Prof. Ignatius Kakande.

A Blueprint for Rural Surgical Care!
How do we bridge the gap between the city and the village? Dr. Isaac Mubeezi and Dr. Francis Basimbe shared a powerful answer today at #ASOUCONF2026: The Hope and Healing Center in Iganga District.
This isn’t just a hospital; it’s a model for transformation. By combining direct care with local and international partnerships, they are proving that high-quality surgery can reach the grassroots.
The 3 Pillars of the Iganga Model:
✅ Direct Care: Bringing life-saving surgery directly to the Iganga community.
✅ Training & Mentorship: Empowering surgical residents and district-level non-surgeon health providers with the skills they need.
✅ Global & Local Partnerships: Leveraging a network of support to ensure sustainability and excellence.
"Healing happens where the people are."
