@MFDA_mv Admitting you can't assure food safety is a serious problem. Food safety isn't a desk job. Instead of building inspection, enforcement and testing capacity and getting out into the field, why are you people always busy playing office?
Moody's upgraded the Maldives status, my bank announced record profits, a foreign investor brought in a $20 billion investment. I'm still struggling to pay for my OneDrive cloud at $1.90, Spotify at $5.45, and Google storage at $9.85. Total less than $17. I'm still moody.🙄
Healthcare workers care for us every day. Their mental health must matter too.
Excessive workloads, staff shortages and unsafe work environments are workplace issues that demand systemic solutions.
Protect those who care for us. Turn awareness into action.

Happy World Teachers’ Day!
Teachers do more than teach—they inspire curiosity, shape minds, and help build the future of our communities.
MHPU stands in solidarity with teachers and all education workers. Their dedication deserves respect, decent working conditions, fair treatment, and the resources they need to thrive.
This #WorldTeachersDay, let’s celebrate teachers by supporting them—not just today, but every day.
When we support teachers, we invest in the future.
Dear Maldivian students studying abroad,
BML has started imposing a 10% additional fee (on top of all existing fees) on your foreign transactions such as ATM withdrawals.
So add that to your monthly budget please. You’re losing $100 from every $1,000.
On International Youth Day 2026, MHPU calls for a Maldives where young health professionals and workers can pursue their aspirations with dignity, equality, safety and decent work.
This means safe and healthy working conditions, protection from burnout, occupational injuries, harassment, intimidation and all forms of discrimination, including gender-based discrimination; fair and timely payment for overtime; and fair opportunities for professional advancement through continuing medical education, skills training, career development and effective mentoring, helping address skills gaps and support meaningful career progression.
It also means inclusive and participatory decision-making that genuinely incorporates the voices, expertise and innovative ideas of health professionals and workers’ unions in shaping institutional and national policies.
Protect young workers. Invest in their skills and development. Listen to their voices. Build a healthier, fairer and more inclusive future for the Maldives.

It has been less than a month since reclamation was completed for an airport the island didn’t even need
Currently:
- The Harbour is black and full of dead fish
- The island’s famous Sikundi Kulhi mangrove is dying
On this year’s International Nurses Day theme, “Our Nurses. Our Future. Caring for nurses strengthens economies,” the MHPU reiterates its urgent call for safe staffing ratios, fair workloads, and stronger protections for nurses across the health system.
Unsafe staffing continues to fuel burnout, workplace hazards, and exhaustion among nurses, directly affecting both worker wellbeing and patient safety. Chronic understaffing has also resulted in excessive overtime (OT), long working hours, and inadequate rest, placing unsustainable physical and mental strain on nurses.
Nurses cannot continue to carry the burden of a strained health system through endless overtime and unsafe workloads. Ensuring safe staffing, fair compensation for OT, adequate rest, and healthy working conditions is essential to retaining skilled nurses and strengthening the healthcare system for the future.

Healthcare workers are being pushed beyond safe limits — working long hours, six days a week, with inadequate rest. Burnout is a serious reality, causing physical and mental exhaustion. This not only harms workers, but also compromises the quality and safety of patient care. Fatigue increases the risk of errors, accidents, and preventable harm.
We demand safe staffing ratios and adequate rest periods for all healthcare workers.

This Lab Professionals Week, the Maldives Health Professionals Union (MHPU) recognizes the critical role of laboratory professionals—the backbone of accurate diagnosis, disease surveillance, and patient safety.
Every test result that guides treatment, every detection that prevents an outbreak, and every data point that informs public health decisions begins in the laboratory. Yet, the contributions of lab professionals remain challenged by the systemic barriers that undermine the quality of care and health and well-being of the worker;
•24/7 on call duty in the peripheral health centers - managing emergencies and OPDs, the strain in heavier during outbreaks
•Working alone on call 24/7 for prolonged periods of time leads to exhaustion, burnout and increases errors that compromises patient safety.
•Capped overtime at 10% as per the new pay standards – but forced to work beyond without pay.
•Expatriate medical lab professionals excluded from the public sector pay framework
MHPU calls:
•Safe and adequately resourced working environments
•Fair recognition and career progression pathways
•Protection from occupational hazards
•Continued investment in laboratory systems and workforce development
•Implementing new pay framework for expatriate workers
We stand in solidarity with all laboratory professionals across the Maldives.

A resilient healthcare system begins with a protected, respected, and empowered workforce. As we mark World Health Day 2026, we highlight the urgent need to uphold the rights of health professionals- including safe working conditions, fair compensation, manageable workloads, and access to mental health support.
Health workers are the backbone of our healthcare system. Yet too often, they face challenges that compromise both their well-being and the quality of care they provide.
