Ever wondered about the link between @Athletic_en & @NewportCounty? It goes back to the Basque refugee children who arrived in Caerleon during the Spanish Civil War. They created the formidable Basque Boys AFC. I wrote about their incredible story here: https://t.co/Y11vgxobax
#OTD in 1937 German & Italian planes bombed the town of #Gernika. The most famous account was written by George Steer for The Times. The atrocity persuaded the #Basque government to accelerate their refugee programme. 20k children evacuated abroad, 4k of them to Britain. 1/2

Despairing at the state of the world, I just re-read this brilliant poem by the amazing Patrick Jones. Patrick kindly wrote the poem for the 85th anniversary event in Caerleon commemorating the arrival of the Basque refugees in Wales. #StopWar#RefugeesWelcome@heretic101
The historic Pendragon House in Caerleon is for sale if you have a spare few quid! A beautiful house with an amazing history. It was where some of the Basque children refugees were cared for during the Spanish Civil War. #RefugeesWelcome#StopWar#Euskadi#Cymru#Gales#Wales
#OnThisDay in 1937 the Euzkadi football team visited Basque refugee children who were being looked after near Moscow. There were over 500 children, some of them the children of friends of the players. During the visit, captain Luis Regueiro refereed a match between the ‘niños’.
#OnThisDay in 1938 the Daily Mirror reported that the legendary Fred Pentland made an appearance at a party for Basque refugees who were being cared for in Britain during the Spanish Civil War. ‘El Bombín’ was managing Barrow at the time. #AthleticClub#RefugeesWelcome#StopWar

A few weeks ago, I was in #Normandie & visited the grave of Lucio Sauquillo Echevarría who died from his wounds #OTD in 1944. What was a #Basque refugee child doing in the #ParachuteRegiment on #DDay? A🧵
Greatly honoured today to lay flowers at the memorial plaque for the Basque children fleeing Nazi/Fascist persecution in 1937. Today marks the date when Southampton citizens opened their hearts to admit 4,000 refugee Basque children - defying the local and national politicians.
On this day in 1937, nearly 4,000 Basque child refugees from the Spanish Civil War - accompanied by teachers, helpers and priests, but without their parents - disembarked the SS Habana at Southampton. Find out more at https://t.co/nfV1Zw3Ni3
On this day in 1937, the Basque town of Gernika was destroyed by the Nazi Condor Legion and Italian air force, immortalised by Picasso's Guernica.
