Hoarding of utilities is a terrible thing to do to other human beings. It is very apparent to us when it comes to things like food, medicines, water, etc. But there is something which is in plainsight, and breaks the financial backbone of many families - hoarding of living spaces.

In every single Indian city that I can think of, there are tonnes of living spaces - flats and houses - that are owned by people who will never live in them. That NRI uncle, that influencer who has the LLC in Dubai, that dodgy neighbourhood 60 year old who looks like he has some black money, Politicians, Benamis of Politicians, the driver of the benami of the politican, the son-in-law of the driver of the benami of the politician - the list goes on. These people buying up properties increases the value of many properties in a hoarding/ black money sinking/ speculative bubble. This makes honest, hardworking, young families unable to afford homes near their place of work. They end up taking huge home loans, becoming EMI slaves to banks and sacrificing their youths in the altar of real estate mafia-ism. And take all sorts of shit at the abusive employers and work over time, because my lord, the EMI. Many still can't afford, so they live on inflated rents in unfinished projects 40 km away from the nearest city centre with 3000 dogs guarding the roads that don't have street lamps yet. They commute 2 hours every day and hardly get to see their wives and children. A friend of mine was divorced, and one of the things that wrecked them was the daily 2 hour commute for the husband and wife both.

Housing is a basic human need, not merely a financial asset. Governments should make it progressively more expensive to accumulate residential properties that are left vacant or held purely for speculation. Taxes on additional residential properties, vacancy taxes, and stronger action against benami ownership can reduce incentives to hoard housing while preserving incentives for owners who provide rental housing. The objective should be to keep homes available for people who want to live in them rather than allowing them to become passive stores of wealth.

Could it be a simple case of wheelchair passengers getting to skip all queues during boarding and have to wait till the end to deboard??

Many Indians who travel internationally are first-generation global travelers. They have not been socialised from childhood into the unspoken rules of European public life. Contrast that with Indians who grew up in global cities or studied abroad early. Their behaviour abroad is often indistinguishable from locals. Culture is not fixed.

What is important is the call for attentiveness. Travel does demand a pause. You enter another society’s choreography. Volume, distance, queues, silence, touch, eye contact, waste, rules. All of these are languages. When you ignore them, you are not asserting confidence; you are broadcasting illiteracy.

The goal is not to become apologetic travellers, shrinking ourselves to fit someone else’s comfort. It is to become observant travellers, able to switch registers without losing self-respect.
