Mustafa Murad Al-Dabbagh was a distinguished Palestinian writer, historian, and educator, born in 1897 in Jaffa, Palestine 🇵🇸

He is best remembered for his monumental work Biladuna Filastin (Our Country Palestine), a foundational and meticulously documented reference on the geography, history, and social fabric of Palestine, widely regarded as one of the most important encyclopedic works on the country.

Al-Dabbagh received his early education in Jaffa before completing his secondary studies in Beirut. In 1915, he served as a reserve officer in the Ottoman Army. After returning to Palestine in 1919, he devoted himself to education—working as a teacher and later principal in Hebron, and subsequently as a social sciences instructor at the Arab College of Jerusalem.

Over the course of his career, he held several senior educational roles across the Arab world, including Undersecretary of the Jordanian Ministry of Education in Amman and Director of Education in Qatar (1959–1961). His scholarship extended beyond Palestine to encompass wider Arab history and regional studies, cementing his legacy as one of the foremost Palestinian historians of the 20th century.

Among his most notable works are Our Country Palestine, Ancient History of the Arab Homeland (1951), A Brief History of Palestine (1960), and Qatar: Its Past and Present (1961). His writings remain valuable references for historians and researchers of Palestinian and Arab history.

Al-Dabbagh passed away in Beirut on September 7, 1989. In recognition of his cultural and intellectual contributions, he was posthumously awarded the Jerusalem Medal for Culture and Arts in 1990.

Muin Bseiso (1926–1984) was born in Gaza City to Tawfiq Bseiso and Huda al-Shawwa. He studied in Gaza and graduated from the American University in Cairo in 1952 with a degree in journalism. Early on, he joined the Palestinian communist movement and began writing politically charged poetry inspired by Abu Salma. His first collection, Al-Ma‘raka (The Battle), was published in 1952.

Returning to Gaza, he worked as an English teacher but was repeatedly dismissed and imprisoned by Egyptian authorities for his political activism and involvement in demonstrations against refugee resettlement schemes. Over time, he became secretary-general of the Palestine Communist Party and edited its underground journal Al-Sharara.

Following his release from prison in 1963, Bseiso resumed teaching and later helped establish the Palestine Broadcasting Company after the creation of the PLO in 1964. When Israel occupied Gaza in 1967, he left for Damascus, working as a journalist and radio writer, then moved to Cairo, Beirut, and finally Tunis. In Beirut, he was active in the Afro-Asian Writers Union and edited The Lotus magazine. He also worked for Filastin al-Thawra, the PLO’s main publication, and became the organization’s cultural counselor under Yasser Arafat.

Bseiso’s poetry, translated into many languages, championed resistance, social justice, and the Palestinian cause. He spent seven years in prison and emerged as a central figure of Palestinian resistance literature alongside Mahmoud Darwish and Samih al-Qasim. He also wrote six politically themed plays. His awards include the PLO’s Shield of the Revolution for Arts and Literature (1979) and the Lotus Prize for Literature (1980).

He died of a heart attack in London in 1984; Israel denied his burial in Gaza, and he was laid to rest in Cairo.

Posthumously, his complete works were published in Beirut in 2015, and exhibitions have since honored his life and legacy as a revolutionary poet of the Palestinian people.
