The Honourable Commissioner Gamawa, representing the Governor of Bauchi State, along with the state delegation, paid a courtesy visit to Mr. Yusuf Sharafa, Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries of Algeria.

Africa cannot afford to remain dependent on food imports. 🌍🌾

At #IATF2025, the Agribusiness panel on Building Self-Sufficiency and Moving Up the Value Chain highlighted both Algeria’s and Nigeria’s strategies to transform agriculture into a builder of resilience and accelerator of growth.

Mr. Khaled Ben Mohamed, Director General of BNEDER, Algeria, described how the country is redeploying production southwards, tapping vast aquifers to irrigate over 2 million hectares of land, while scaling oilseeds, cereals and agro-industry:
“We see resilient crops as an opportunity to save water and diversify production, while building an agro-industry that can supply both Algeria and export markets.”

Hon. Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed Governor of Bauchi State in Nigeria positioned his state as an agribusiness hub with over 4.2 million hectares of arable land and one of West Africa’s largest grazing reserves. He made a clear call to action: “Africa should not be raw materials alone. We have to create a reverse industrialised economy to grow our own food.”

Food corridors, value addition and private sector partnerships are the path to breaking the $100bn food import bill and building a secure future.
