More MPs do not automatically mean better governance. Studies offer no robust case for that assumption. India’s biggest governance failures — schools, healthcare, policing, water, cities, land records — largely sit with the States under the Seventh Schedule. The central problem is not a representation deficit. It is an authority-accountability deficit.The priority should be structural reform. The argument is not against representation. It is against confusing numbers with power.
