@EddieComeaux Athletes should not be separated from their own likeness and be robbed of the profits made off Of their likeness. It’s exploitation pure and simple. #AthleteInclusion
This weeks readings bring light to some very concerning issues: first, the prioritization of athletics over academics, and second, the lack of funding and support historically black colleges & universities receive. I think this points to the NCAAs true values. #ucr_150
@daymeza_ @Songling_GSOE This is so unfair, the education they receive isnt even one they truly want. It goes to show that universities do not care about their athletes outside of what profit they can take in. #ucr150
It really is terrible that student athletes are so exploited by their institutions *and* denied the rights to their own names and images and profit. It goes to show that student athletes are not students, just exploited athletes who are not treated fairly #ucr150 @Songling_GSOE
@miranda_ramos27 @Songling_GSOE Hi Miranda! I agree totally. That policy only exists to limit student rights and help universities rake in the big bucks. Very upsetting. #UCR150
@Songling_GSOE #ucr150 the rules upheld by the NCAA percent students from transferring between schools. However, coaches do not face the same restriction and can follow the money trail. Students rights are being restricted for the sake of university profit.
Caster Semenya just posted her new Nike ad. "Would it be easier for you if I wasn't so fast? Would it be simpler for you if I stopped winning?" Brilliant, beautiful.
@daymeza_ @Songling_GSOE This is absolutely horrifying. We read about this in text but seeing it happen in real life is entirely different. It’s so real. #UCR150
The NCAA is a joke. Our teammate Jordan McNair passes away during a NCAA sanctioned workout. But now, as a NCAA student athlete, I am not allowed to promote a fundraiser we are having for his parents Jordan McNair Foundation! I can’t even tweet the flyer! That’s my Ted Talk.
The NCAA does not protect its athletes from the many physical injuries they endure. Not only are concussions a frequent encounter, they are not properly handled or assessed. This is an abuse of student athletes. @Songling_GSOE #ucr150
@jcornejo2017 @Songling_GSOE I think this a very good point. It’s not necessarily malicious but it is complacent. Although I do think there are similar sports or ways for girls to engage in those sports (women’s rugby) but they aren’t called attention to by the universities #ucr150
Title 9, while useful in some contexts, falls flat in athletics. The chapter discusses the 3 part test which is used to determine if universities are compliant. However this is not enforced because each part is vague and only one has to be met. #ucr150 @Songling_GSOE
@jcornejo2017 This is so wild! To see it in numbers really solidifies how real this issue is. It’s bizarre that it goes so undiscussed too. #UCR150 @Songling_GSOE
ruins athletic eligibility, which means no money to afford school. So they really only have one choice and it’s to play hard to be able to keep their scholarships. This targets vulnerable populations who otherwise wouldn’t be able to attend university. #ucr150 @Songling_GSOE
Athletic scholarships offer false hope to vulnerable athletes. They are presented with a false narrative: you can afford to go to school if you play. But the reality is athletics do not allow for academic success, and the prioritization of academics 1/?
#ucr150 @Songling_GSOE
Student athletes work toward a goal that is often not achievable. Only about 3% of student athletes go pro, meaning that the work put in during their college careers is often not worth it.
