PRESS RELEASE | Bayan Muna Condemns Regressive Value Added Tax on Digital Services

Former Bayan Muna Congressman @kaloi_zarate has strongly condemned the recently enacted Value Added Tax (VAT) on Digital Services Law, highlighting its regressive impact and the undue burden it places on ordinary Filipinos.

"The imposition of a 12% digitax on digital goods and services is not the way forward. This measure will unfairly impact ordinary citizens, who will bear the brunt of increased subscription fees on platforms like Netflix and Spotify," Zarate asserted. "Even digital platforms used to support education, such as Canva and Zoom, will be subjected to this tax unless they are used by accredited educational institutions."

"Bakit pass on charges like VAT na end users o consumers ang tinatamaan ang pinapasa ng Marcos admin? Bakit hindi i-certify as urgent ang Wealth Tax na ipapataw sa mga oligarchs at bilyonaryo na nagpapasasa ng limpak-limpak na profits galing sa ating ekonomiya?" Zarate questioned, pointing to the unfairness of such measures.

Zarate emphasized the need for alternative revenue-generating measures, such as a wealth tax, which he argues would be more equitable and effective. "Instead of a digitax, we strongly assert that a wealth tax should be considered. This would generate around P98 billion by imposing a tax on the top 20 billionaires. This should be the focus of our attention," Zarate stated.

He concluded by reiterating his stance against the newly signed law: "For these reasons, we oppose the imposition of VAT on digital services. It's time to prioritize the welfare of the Filipino masses over regressive taxation."###
