Remember the PlayStation game-sharing meme from 2013
Now Shuhei Yoshida and Adam Boyes have recreated the famous photo… without a disc.
Even former PlayStation executives are now mocking Sony
A literal generational fumble happening at Sony right now
>End Destiny
>End physical gaming forever
>End porting exclusives to PC
>Increase prices of PS Plus subscription
>Completely lose Hideo Kojima
>Attempt to cancel Kojima's next Metal Gear franchise
>Kojima cuts ties entirely and goes to XBOX
>Force your single-player studios to make live service games
>Concord happens
>Proceed to cancel most of them, losing years of development time and billions of dollars
>Buy Bluepoint and have them make a live-service rather than remakes
>Close Bluepoint down before they release any games
>Start selling vertical stands separately rather than have them come with the console
>cancel The Last of Us Factions for marathon
>marathon flops
>spend 305 million on a exclusive Wolverine game
>comes out undercooked and painfully mid
>increase prices of your consoles AGAIN
Genuinely... what is going on at Sony. disaster after disaster, huge L after L. Almost unbeliveable how much of a downfall this is. How do you lose EVERYONE this fast? Meanwhile, XBOX is taking full advantage of this and priming a major comeback next generation
PlayStation in 2026:

Genuinely... what is going on at Sony. disaster after disaster, huge L after L. They were my favorite gaming company throughout the PS4 generation but genuinely, how do you lose EVERYONE this fast? Meanwhile, XBOX is taking full advantage of this and priming a major comeback next generation. A literal generational fumble happening at Sony.
SONY, I THINK YOUR OWN ARGUMENT JUST COLLAPSED.
Nobody is claiming that buying a copy of a game means I own the copyright to the game.
"That has never been the argument."
If I buy a movie on Blu-ray, I don't own the movie studio's intellectual property.
"I own MY COPY."
If I buy an album on CD, I don't own the artist's music or the record label's copyright.
"I own MY COPY."
Millions of people can own separate copies of the exact same movie, album, book or game at the same time.
We have understood this for generations.
Apparently everyone but you!
And when I own that physical copy, I can put it into compatible hardware and use it. The studio doesn't suddenly get to argue that ownership is impossible because somebody else bought the same movie too.
So why should a video game suddenly be different just because the delivery mechanism changed from a plastic disc to digital data?
That is where Sony's reported legal argument loses me.
I'm not claiming I own Resident Evil.
I'm claiming I paid for MY COPY of Resident Evil.
Those are two completely different things.
And Xbox just made this argument even harder for @Sony to defend.
Microsoft has demonstrated that a physical game can be tied to an individualized digital entitlement.
They don't have to hand the customer the copyright. They don't have to give one person exclusive ownership of the game.
They simply have to recognize that THIS consumer paid for THIS entitlement to access THIS game.
Millions of people can each possess their own entitlement to the same copyrighted work.
"Of course they can."
Sony already assigns digital licenses to millions of PlayStation accounts every day.
So the question was never whether the technology exists.
The question is what rights the consumer receives after Sony puts the word BUY on the screen and takes their money.
Here is the distinction that matters:
I OWN MY COPY.
I DO NOT OWN THE COPYRIGHT.
Movie studios understand that.
Record labels understand that.
Book publishers understand that.
Physical video games have worked that way for decades.
What makes you any different, @Sony?
Digital distribution should not magically erase that concept simply because the corporation has more technical control over the transaction.
And if the customer pays full price while receiving fewer rights and less control, I think consumers have every right to ask who actually benefits from that arrangement.
Sony doesn't need to give me ownership of its intellectual property.
Sony needs to explain why paying full price for my copy should give Sony more control over what I purchased simply because that copy arrived as bits instead of on a disc.
And Xbox has now demonstrated that individualized digital entitlements are absolutely possible.
The movie and music industries have demonstrated the underlying principle for generations.
Sony companies themselves sell movies and music on physical media that consumers can buy, take home and play whenever they want on compatible equipment.
So please explain why video games should suddenly be treated differently.
That makes the legal argument much more difficult to defend.
That's the conversation I think Sony needs to answer.

A gamer finally turned on his PS3 after years to replay Metal Gear Solid 4 - only to discover that Sony had deleted his PlayStation account after 36 months of inactivity, leaving him unable to access his digital game library. 💀🎮
This is exactly why digital “ownership” is becoming a serious concern. If your games are tied to a revocable license rather than permanent ownership, what happens when your account is deleted?
Sony has previously argued in court that digital purchases are licenses, while legal challenges are now emerging around digital licensing, physical games and what consumers actually own.
With Sony reportedly moving toward a more disc-free future by 2028, these concerns are only getting bigger.
If you already support #PSBlackout, keep pushing. And if you haven’t joined, now may be the time.
You shouldn’t lose access to games you paid for simply because you stopped logging in. Physical media suddenly looks a lot more valuable. 👀

Games have changed.
It’s no longer about discs, shelves, or ownership. It’s an endless series of licenses, served by storefronts and servers.
Games—and their consumption of collections—have become a well-oiled machine.
Games have changed.
Account-tagged players carry account-tagged keys, use account-tagged downloads. Always-online checks inside the client enhance and regulate access.
License control, store control, patch control, catalog control… everything is monitored and kept under control.
Games… have changed.
The age of ownership has become the age of access, all in the name of averting catastrophe from used copies and piracy, and he who controls the storefront, controls the library.
Games… have changed.
When the catalog is under total control, games become licenses.
