Every impactful solution starts with someone who decided to build instead of waiting.
Today, I’m honoured to speak with the Engineering Muslim Students’ Society (EMSS), UNILAG, on:
From Skills to Scale: Building What Matters
We’ll be talking about turning skills into products.
Nigerians keep saying this government has zero plans for skills and jobs.
Meanwhile, Germany, the largest manufacturing economy in Europe, runs on a model where over half of academically qualified students choose vocational training over university. Eight in ten German workers hold a trade certificate, technical qualification, or degree. Companies pay apprentices to learn, then hire most of them directly after.
Nigeria is finally building that same architecture. Not one programme. Eight of them, running in parallel, across different ministries, each targeting a different gap.
SUPA trains artisans, welders, electricians, plumbers, and fashion designers with international certification and a ₦35,000 monthly stipend.
TVET, run by the Ministry of Education, covers electrical work, mechanics, ICT and construction, paying trainees ₦22,500 a month and training centres ₦45,000 per trainee.
NDE runs vocational and resettlement schemes for the unemployed, with stipends from ₦10,000 to ₦35,000.
CEYEI trains youths in recycling and green enterprise.
NATEP and the National Talent Export Programme are positioning Nigerians for global digital and outsourcing markets, no stipend, pure skills and export pathway, targeting a million export-linked jobs by 2030.
NJFP places graduates directly into paid 12-month fellowships at ₦150,000 monthly.
YEIDEP provides one-time enterprise grants ranging from ₦50,000 to ₦500,000, depending on the business category.
Eight structured pathways. Real stipends. Real certification. Real placement pipelines being built. This is not a country with zero plans. This is a country building the same skills infrastructure that powers Germany's economy, just starting from a different point.
In the next 8 posts, I will dive deep into each one to show you what they are doing.
