Android bootloader restrictions just took a hit.

A new exploit chain targeting Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 devices can unlock bootloaders that OEMs heavily restricted.

The issue lies in Qualcomm’s bootloader implementation on Android 16 devices.

How it works:

• ABL loads the Generic Bootloader Library (GBL) from the efisp partition
• the bootloader only checks if it’s a UEFI app
• it does NOT verify authenticity

This means unsigned code can be executed during the boot process.

But writing to efisp normally isn’t allowed.

So the exploit chains another oversight:

fastboot set-gpu-preemption 0 androidboot.selinux=permissive

This flips SELinux from Enforcing to Permissive.

Once SELinux is permissive, other vulnerabilities can write a custom UEFI payload that sets:

is_unlocked = 1
is_unlocked_critical = 1

Which effectively unlocks the bootloader.

Already demonstrated on:

• Xiaomi 17 series
• Redmi K90 Pro Max
• POCO F8 Ultra

All powered by Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5.

More devices could be affected depending on their OEM bootloader implementation.
