On behalf of Baystate Medical Center’s Division of Nephrology, Drs. Landry and Braden would like to thank Walter Reed for an invitation to present “Home Dialysis: Discovering the Educational Tools and Support for a Successful Program”. Thank you Dr. Yuan for a great meeting!
2/ Later that evening we celebrated the amazing career that Dr. Germain has had as he ventures towards retirement. He has mentored many and has been an incredible teacher to our fellows over the years. We wish him all the best in his retirement!
1/ Renal Rounds Recap 11/18/2022:
Dr. Mike Germain gave an in-depth review of the KDIGO guidelines on CKD and diabetes. This is an excellent clinical practice guideline for nephrologists and all physicians that look after these patients.
7/ Conlusions:
✅More investigation into whether SGLT2i may provide benefit on dialysis as well as devices such as CardioMEMS
✅Effects of home therapies on HF may be beneficial
✅Collaboration necessary between nephrology and advanced heart failure!
1/ Renal Rounds Recap 11/11:
Dr. Arley Diaz discussed the evidence behind various therapies in heart failure in ESRD patients. The title of his presentation says it all: Heart and Renal Failure From no evidence to clinical practice.
6/ ✅LV dysfunction strong predictor of mortality- ICD implantation in these patients showed survival benefit
✅One study in Am J Transplantation Schaffer et. al. 2014 also showed benefit to heart kidney transplantation over just heart in matched patients
Comparison of I-STAT Point of Care vs. Indirect Ion Selective Electrode Measurements of Serum Sodium in Severe Hyponatremia @nephrobro#KidneyWk#Nephpearls
1/ Renal Rounds Recap 11/4/2022:
One of our first year fellows Dr. Umair Khan gave his first renal rounds this past week on CKDu or CKD of unknown etiology and these were his key learning points.
5/Conclusions:
✅Not all forms of CKD are due to traditional etiologies
✅CKDu remains underdiagnosed
✅Not all agricultural communities have high rates of CKD but all have exposure to heat stress/chemicals suggesting genetic link which needs to be explored!
It was a great #KidneyWk! Here is one of our residents Sreyoshi Alam showing off her fantastic poster on Probenecid induced IgA nephropathy. @BaystateIM
#KidneyWk is here and we have multiple posters being presented! Congrats to Pir Shehzad, Sabiha Khan and Sreyoshi Alam on their amazing posters. Please stop by and check them out!!
Renal Rounds Recap 10/28/2022:
Program Director, Dr. Greg Braden gave a fantastic renal ground rounds on sudden cardiac death in dialysis patients. Initially many of these events were thought to be related to VT/VF but many are actually bradycardic events.
4/ He finished by discussing his findings on major risk factors for sudden cardiac death in dialysis patients:
✅High calcium intake > 3000 mg daily
✅Right Bundle Branch Block
✅Prolonged QTC at baseline
✅Spike in serum calcium just prior to the event
