In 1974, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, Gen. George S. Brown, created a major controversy when he warned of the dangers of the Israel Lobby on US foreign policy. In 1976, he got into trouble again by arguing that Israel was a "liability" and "burden" to the US (he was forced to apologize).

William Buckley, on his "Firing Line" program, interviewed a Jewish reporter for the Washington Post, Stephen Isaacs about Gen. Brown's 1974 remarks, and Isaacs said that while Gen.Brown phrased things indelicately or worse, there was major truth in what he said:
