Credit where it is due, and I will say this even though it is not the popular thing to say in this feed right now.

The speed of this response is not something India usually manages, and it deserves to be applauded.

Let me walk through what all has actually happened.

The NEET-UG exam was held on 3 May this year. Around 22.7 lakh students sat it across more than 5,400 centres.

Nine days later, it was cancelled. The trigger was an investigation that found overlaps between a pre-circulated guess paper and the actual question paper.

In 2024 a similar fight dragged on for months and had to be settled in the Supreme Court.

Then the CBI moved. It registered an FIR covering criminal conspiracy, cheating, criminal breach of trust, theft, and destruction of evidence, along with charges under the Prevention of Corruption Act and the Public Examinations Prevention of Unfair Means Act 2024.

The tough anti-paper-leak law that people keep demanding was actually used here.

The CBI arrested Manisha Havaldar, a headmistress of a Pune school, on 22 May for leaking the physics paper.

She had access because the NTA had appointed her as a subject expert. She recalled the questions from memory, shared them with a student, printed the material on the school computer, then erased her chats and burned her notes.

So the person who broke the exam was inside the system, trusted to build it.

Now you cannot fix an insider leak with more barricades and more jammers. You fix it by changing who touches the paper, how they are watched, and how the whole thing is compartmentalised so no single expert ever holds enough to leak.

It was always a process problem.

Now look at what the government did next.

A re-test was held on 21 June. Results came out on 16 July, and counselling is underway now. So the students who lost their exam through no fault of theirs got a fresh shot within weeks.

On top of that, a Parliamentary Standing Committee summoned the top NTA officials, including the Director General and the Chairperson, along with the Education Secretary, and grilled them on what they were doing to stop the next leak, using the Radhakrishnan Committee recommendations as the base.

And now Modi Ji is saying more strict action lands in tomorrow's Cabinet.

Put all of that together honestly.

> The insider arrested inside three weeks.
> Re-test done. Results out.
> Parliament involved.
> Cabinet action coming.

That is close to the full list of what a protest on this issue could realistically force. The system did not stonewall this time. It moved.

Which brings me to the uncomfortable thing I want to say to the students still on the road, and I say it as someone who taught aspirants for years and hurts for them.

You have largely won the fight you could win by marching.

The value of a protest is highest when the system is ignoring you.

Once it has cancelled the exam, arrested the leaker, re-run the test, and put reform on the Cabinet table, the marginal gain from one more day of tear gas drops fast.

The energy is better spent watching the follow-through than getting hurt at a barricade.

I am not saying the anger was wrong. It was right.

The anger is what made this move at all. I am saying anger has a job, and here the job is mostly done.

What is left is not something a crowd can force. It is something only careful institutional work can deliver.

The Cabinet meeting is the actual test.

If the strict action is only bigger punishments, that is treating a fresh wound with the same medicine that already failed, because the leak this year happened despite a two-year-old law with ten-year jail terms already on the books.

The action that would truly matter is to rebuild how the NTA selects and monitors its experts.

Split the paper-setting chain so no insider can memorise and leak.

Independent audit, published, with names and timelines attached.

If tomorrow delivers that, this becomes one of the best crisis responses we have seen from any government in years, and the students should take the win.

If it delivers only louder threats, the protest was right to exist, and the actual work still has not started.

The government has been fast. Now it has to be right.

They have speed handled the fire. Improving the process stops the next leak.
