Big Tech kicks off Q2 earnings today, and the AI trade is entering its toughest test yet.

For the past two years, the market rewarded companies for investing in more GPUs, larger data centers, greater power capacity and bigger capex budgets.

Now investors are asking a harder question 👉 Where is the return?

The Productivity J-Curve offers one reason why the answer may not appear immediately.

When a general-purpose technology like AI arrives, value does not come from installing hardware alone. Companies also need to redesign workflows, retrain employees, build new products and rethink how the organization operates.

Those intangible investments take time, and much of their value does not immediately appear on an income statement.

So a gap between AI spending and visible ROI is not necessarily evidence that the spending has failed.

But the J-Curve is an explanation, not an excuse.

Not every GPU becomes revenue.
Not every data center improves margins.
And not every company spending heavily on AI will successfully turn compute into economic output.

$MSFT’s AI business has surpassed a $37 billion annual revenue run rate, one of the clearest signs that monetization is taking shape. But revenue is only the first test.

The market will increasingly look for margin improvement, stronger free cash flow and evidence that each new dollar of capex is becoming more productive.

That is why the next two weeks matter.

$GOOGL, $TSLA and the rest of Big Tech are no longer being judged only on how aggressively they are building AI infrastructure. They are being judged on whether they have built the products, workflows and business models needed to turn that infrastructure into measurable returns.

The AI capex story is not over, but the ROI audit has begun.
