ECOWAS Council of Ministers meeting in Abuja, Nigeria has unanimously endorsed President John Dramani Mahama of Ghana as the sole candidate from ECOWAS for Chairperson of the African Union when the rotating chairmanship gets to West Africa’s turn in 2027.

The Authority of Heads of State and Government is expected to adopt this declaration on Sunday.

I thank colleague Ministers greatly.

Ghana is exceedingly grateful to ECOWAS for the confidence and support for our beloved visionary and Pan-African President, H.E. John Dramani Mahama.

I spoke of Government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen primary healthcare across the country, notably by uncapping the NHIS, upgrading healthcare infrastructure nationwide, organizing the landmark Africa Health Sovereignty Summit in Accra, and launching the MahamaCares initiative to support patients with chronic diseases. These interventions are laying the foundation for long-term health security.

However, we also rely on strong partnerships and private sector leadership. In that regard, today’s ceremony shows what a shared vision and a common goal can achieve. The Medical Centre, constructed by the KGL Foundation, and in partnership with the EVE Medical Foundation and Her Royal Highness, is a demonstration of corporate social responsibility aligning with regional and national development goals. The Centre is expected to expand access to mental health services in a stigma-free environment. Its potential contributions to research and collaboration with KNUST further highlight the importance of bridging academia and community care.

I congratulate all stakeholders whose vision brought this project to life. May the facility serve the Ashanti Region well, and contribute meaningfully to the health and progress of our nation.

The Attorney General, Dr. Dominic Ayine has expressed concerns over the behavior of the Minority during the vetting process of Chief Justice nominee Paul Baffoe Bonnie.
