@agundling can you elaborate on what you mean about the struggles facing the big money college sports? Gambling, NIL, and portal combining to erode some of the fan experience perhaps? I'm a Kansas fan, your age, and it is hard not having guys who are your guys any more
@COsoccerpod Not going to bat for it or the series/genre writ large, but given your WW2 interests you guys might enjoy Captain America fwiw. I was a Marvel hater/holdout, but I came around on them cuz a friend loved them. Captain is interesting because he is largely defensive with his shield
@MoDakhil_NBA But more than anything, it would be hard to draw a throughline from losing for 30 games to Profit. And ultimately future success and winning is the motivation for tanking.
@MoDakhil_NBA I have an actual solution to tanking. It's byzantine, so I'll need to write it out in a blog post, but its complexity is a feature that undermines the easy calculus teams are capable of doing whereby losing concertedly in the shortterm leads to obvious win cons
@MoDakhil_NBA or they begin to have some success and preclude themselves from doldrumhood and tanking doesn't work. Wizards couldn't tank because they just got Trae and AD and that would tank their tankable odds.
@MoDakhil_NBA if a team like worst universe Sac got multiple bites at the apple like Process Philly and they didn't get a ROY or MVP or couldn't win a single playoff series etc etc then the talent they did draft were either utter busts or made it to new teams...
@MoDakhil_NBA to manipulate this you would have to be incompetent like Sacramento for 20 years, and not have had Fox, Sabonis, or made trades for Lavine or DeRozan; not have COY, not have the light the beam season-- it would require badness spanning multiple front office firings
@MoDakhil_NBA key to this is that being bad increases the likelihood of difference making draft picks, but the badness is so much more sustained that doing it intentionally would be too painful, less tied to a single or several season bottoming out, and hard to make any coherent plan from
it includes current season wins/lossss in a capped-but-not-insignifcant odds boost (maybe 2%), and so much more, but it also attenuates the odds decreases as a weighted factor of totals and time; as each teams odds are decreased based on metrics of success the dregs rise
in brief, it essentially punishes lottery odds for every discrete metric of success, championships, all-stars, marquee trades, FA signings, playoff appearances, series victories, jersey sales, attendance, etc etc, on down to a Q rating by media members...
@JJDevaney listening to old plus pods, you spoke of injectable cartilage--I'm a nurse and my patient a few weeks ago got successful stem cell infusions in his knee to regrow cartilage. It costs 10k but he went for a handful of injections and it did what you've dreamt of
