I've always secretly fancied myself an archivist. Curating vast catalogs of images has never been easier. But recently it's felt like I've been encountering the same pseudo-eclectic images over and over again. We’ve turned culture into a giant, searchable archive where we link aesthetics, history, and post-modern ennui into highly recognizable, cohesive digital patterns. A seemingly clever but sterile scholarship: rich in representation, but lacking in practice.

I'm mildly embarrassed to confess that I haven't actually read Cormac McCarthy. But I've come across this terrific quote by the revered author, and it's become commonplace to quote authors one hasn't read. Anyway, McCarthy wrote somewhere:

Well said. I'd add that we don't even go to the beach to buy the postcard now, we just right-click save the sunset. We curate the life we're too exhausted to experience first hand.

Mail-art is a refusal to limit oneself to the archive. A physical artifact can't be 're-indexed' or 'saved-as.' It's a personal, sometimes messy, tactile event. I'm absolutely loving all the #LatencyLedger WIPs everyone is sharing! Some correspondence has just shipped and will be duly recorded on blockchain. 

The more I think about this project, the more I'm inclined to document only the highlights: the fragments and the frictions. There's a sacredness in the part we don't scan. By keeping certain details off-chain and out of the feed, we allow the work to retain its magic. I'm thinking of the catalog as a witness, rather than as an autopsy.

Beyond the echo, we are still here. 💌
