In principle there should be a vote in Parliament when troops are deployed. I’m confident all sides of the House are likely to agree with the Prime Minister apart from those Trump bootlickers in Reform.
To be realistic is not to carp. I accept that we cannot turn back the clock. But we should not delude ourselves. Brexit has caused our country harm that far outweighs any benefits that can currently be identified. The list of "benefits " are either theoretical or ( new trade deals), no compensation for the trade and o-operation we have lost.
Successive governments, Conservative and now Labour promise to "make Brexit work". But they have shown not the slightest sign of being able to do so. Loss of public confidence in government generally is fuelling a willingness to abandon democratic values. I would be pleased to be proved wrong but all my political experience tells me that we will struggle to deliver the security and quality of life that U.K. citizens aspire to have, as long as we fail to build a durable political partnership with our closest neighbours. Meanwhile the legitimacy of our political institutions will be called into question because they are not delivering for the public.
We both went into politics to serve our country, which you have done with honour. It depresses me therefore to see you lose your seat as a direct consequence of this collapse in trust.
At some point rebuilding our relations with our nearest neighbours is going to have to be prioritised both for the sake of our economy and our security. That will require compromises that we we were told by Leavers in 2016 could now be abandoned for ever.
Five years since we left the EU and not one tangible benefit to have come from it.
Most telling of all is how it has diminished our ability to generate wealth and thus provide for our defence and public services in challenging times. Far from getting rid of red tape there were 41 million customs declarations to be made for trade between the U.K. and EU in 2023. Not surprisingly over 16,000 SMEs have given up exporting to Europe and our goods exports are rising at the paltry rate of 0.3% per annum compared to the OECD average of of 4.3%. Margaret Thatcher helped create the Single Market in goods and services because she could see clearly the boost it could give to our economy and it bore fruit. Until reality dawns for our politicians we are back to the 1960s-constant failing initiatives to boost growth, stagflation and impoverishment. We deserve better and it is within our power to get better. But that means abandoning the politics of fantasy.
People have had enough of Elon Musk interfering with our country’s democracy when he clearly knows nothing about Britain.
It’s time to summon the US ambassador to ask why an incoming US official is suggesting the UK government should be overthrown.
This dangerous and irresponsible rhetoric is further proof that the UK can’t rely on the Trump administration.
It’s in our national interest to rebuild trade and security ties with our allies in Europe.
@IsabelOakeshott@Keir_Starmer Dear Isabel (and all others on this thread who have willingly surrendered UK sovereignty to a lying ill-informed foreign billionaire)
Here is the report your looking for.

@AllisonPearson@Keir_Starmer There has been an inquiry. The Alexis Jay Inquiry. It reported in 2022. The Tories did precisely nothing in response.

Elon Musk again showing he knows nothing (and cares even less) about the issues he posts about. The problem with the grooming gangs wasn't prosecutions being blocked by Starmer or anyone else at the CPS. It was they weren't even investigated. The police were too scared.
The Crown Prosecution Service does indeed have to give approval for police to charge suspects in serious crimes.
But where is the evidence that when Keir Starmer was Director of Public Prosecutions the CPS wrongly refused such consents in rape and child grooming cases? There is none.
On the contrary Starmer was pro-active in focussing on this type of crime as @nazirafzal has correctly highlighted. There may well have been failures to address this issue elsewhere through reporting and investigation but that is not the role of the CPS.
Baseless innuendo does not contribute to serous debate.
@toadmeister Stornaway was there in 1873 as a place where weather measurements were taken and that the weather station was moved/renamed to the airport when it was built.
Of course while you know this Toby you bank on your 307.2k followers being to thick to work this out for themselves.
@TerraOrBust You do know that of as the 1st August 2023 the UK kite mark for standards became voluntary while the EU CE mark for manufactured goods/parts remains compulsory?
The adoption of USB C is a common sense standardisation across Europe & will influence much of the rest of the world.
@AllisonPearson "Dear HM Treasury,
It is illegal in the EU to tax education."
Brexiteer finds that most elusive of post Brexit creatures, "the Brexit Benefit".
Turns out that just like the rest of Brexit, it just a bit shit! 🤣🤣🤣
@TerraOrBust Nowhere in the article does it state the suggested tariffs are EU only. They are world-wide with China subject to 60% tariffs.
For the UK to avoid tariffs what would we have to give up? That's the question.

These are shows to whom I am a stranger.😎
I was given a diagnosis of Stage 4 last Thursday and I can honestly say I'm 99% certain my life lacks for nothing having not seen these shows.
@IsabelOakeshott Then it is fortunate that we've just got rid of a right-wing government amongst who there were those who thought it right and proper to take away the tents being utilised by the homeless and to criminalise those who would supply tents to the homeless.
