Mayor Mamdani outlined his top proposals for the city budget today. These are still just proposals - both the state and city budget must be officially voted on and passed. This is what you need to know about pension restructuring right now. TRS Chair Tom Brown explains.
Any proposed restructuring plan has to be evaluated and then approved or rejected by the Trustees of the Teachers' Retirement System (TRS), whose legal and ethical responsibility is protecting and growing the pension funds. City Hall has yet to outline any proposal, but it is the Trustees' job to measure the worth of these kinds of plans.
We now have a calendar for next school year! Finalizing this calendar presented some challenges, especially since the school year for UFT members doesn't begin until Tuesday, September 8.
The calendar features the legal minimum of 180 combined instructional and PD days. This year, Election Day will be remote instruction. We’ll also have an 11-day spring break like this year.

On Saturday, UFT hosted a Pension Expo at UFT Headquarters. 💲TRS Chair Tom Brown and trustees Victoria Lee and Christina McGrath spoke to members about preparing for retirement at any stage in your career and shared what the TRS does to protect our pensions. Economist Teresa Ghilarducci gave a keynote speech about the importance of retirement security and expanding pensions, saying "We see the value in dignified old age."👏 Thanks to all who joined us to take control of their financial future with the TRS board!
Members of the Federation of Nurses/UFT ratified a new contract Friday night that raises nurses' salaries at Staten Island University Hospital- South (SIUHS), protects their premium-free healthcare and requires the hospital to increase staffing in key units.
With the agreement, the nurses called off a potential strike for April 1, 2026.
"Our nurses are receiving the financial recognition they deserve with an on-time contract that preserves their health care benefits and increases staffing in some of the busiest units," said Anne Goldman, head of the Federation of Nurses/ UFT, which represents over 300 nurses at Staten Island University Hospital- South and over 16,000 nurses statewide.
Bevin Sullivan, a registered nurse who leads the union chapter at SIUHS, said the nurses' determination and advocacy over 18 bargaining sessions resulted in the salary and contract wins.
"We were unified, and the power of collective action came through clearly at the negotiating table," Sullivan said. "The message is that together we can change our working conditions and help our patients."
United Federation of Teachers President Michael Mulgrew agreed that the SIUHS nurses were a force to be reckoned with: "By standing together, our nurses brought needed changes to this hospital. These improvements will be felt not only by our nurses and their families, but by all who rely on this community hospital."

"We've had more camaraderie around Tier Six than ever before." 🤝 The city-wide day of action on 1/6 was about making it visible: to state lawmakers AND to each other. UFT members -- Tier 4, Tier 6, paraprofessionals, teachers, support staff -- are fired up to work together and fix this unfair system for their fellow educators. Thanks to @CBSNewYork for covering our day of action and the push for reform. #FixTierSix
When Trump cut school funding, Success Academy stayed silent.
Who's paying the price? Children in public schools — especially Black & Latino kids — left without the resources they need.
Kids deserve equal resources. Instead, Success Academy students get Ivanka Trump tours & upgraded facilities, while public school children are left behind with fewer resources.
@BBOUFT hosting our 'Meet The President' event with @UFT President, Michael Mulgrew!! Great conversations between he and our Bronx members!! #BronxStrong#UFTStrong

Today I am signing off as the Secretary of Education, my dream job.
What I used to tell my students on the last day of school is that this isn’t goodbye, but rather a celebration of our time together.
This is the same, here are some things I’m celebrating today. 🧵1/6
According to a @UFT survey, there are over 2,200 vacancies for special education support in NYC schools….
Paraprofessionals, teachers, therapists, and more.
This is completely unacceptable.
DOE, #StaffOurSchools now!
