Last week 24 students attended the Spatially Explicit Mark Recapture workshop hosted by Murdoch University and AWMS. Joanne Potts @AnalyticalEdge and Ben Stevenson @bc_stevenson were brilliant instructors, and pulled together an amazing array of lectures, and worked examples!
Congratulations to David Borchers of @univofstandrews who is the recipient of our 2024 Barnett Award for environmental statistics, for the development of new and accessible methodologies in wildlife monitoring & conservation
@BruceEdmonds @GenomicsVC @ajordannafa I don't think so. Sounds like the same logic people use when they see a large p-value and claim it provides evidence for the null hypothesis.
Today was farewell day: @bc_stevenson whom was visiting me at @CEstatisticAUL for a fortnight moved to his next sabbatical stop. Great to have Ben around, chat about work and everything else. Looking forward to catching up at some point. To do: find joint project 4 collaboration
🥳Congratulations🥳 to Zoe Luo for successfully defending their thesis “Two-phase subsampling for DNA sequencing with application to endangered species". #AcademicChatter#PhD Well done Zoe!
Very honoured to have won the interactive data viz prize during this year’s Ihaka lecture series competition!
Special thanks to @bc_stevenson and Rachel Fewster for teaching the amazing STATS 399 class, and for encouraging me to submit.

📢 #Ihaka2023dataviz - a category of its own... 📢
Unfortunately, we couldn't showcase all the submissions, but one we couldn't not show was this from our own @bc_stevenson entitled "Don’t count your grobs" 💚🐔🐤🐔💚

✨Student Spotlight✨ Rishika (@RishikaChopara ) started her PhD in 2021 developing goodness-of-fit tests for spatial capture-recapture models. If you were at @ #euring2023 then you'll have heard all about it! In her spare time she loves #crochet#crossstitch & all things #crafts
If you didn't make it to Prof. Russell Millar's fabulously fishy inaugural lecture this evening keep an eye out @ https://t.co/9Nm6b6XZiO for the recording and read his first paper that whetted his appetite for modelling fish 🐟📜https://t.co/6jAv3lNLdS
How to get academics out of their offices? Free food! Hot Cross buns courtesy of our very own departmental bakers @kirkiekiwi, @tslumley, @bc_stevenson, @beatrixjones3, @cmjonestodd, Emma Lehrke, Kathy Ruggiero, & Peter Mullins.
🎉Congratulations 🎉 to @RishikaChopara for best stats presentation and Godrick Oketch with an honourable mention at the New Zealand Mathematics and Statistics Postgraduate conference last month! #phdchat#PhD 📷L-R, Godrick, Jason Li, Alec van Helsdingen & Rishika.
@millerdl ... And of course they are properly invited to be a reviewer rather than doing the review "for me" (although I'm not sure if that's what is being suggested in the message)
@millerdl I do this with PhD students, but not because I am "too busy"! It takes me longer to make it a worthwhile "teaching opportunity" than it does to just review the paper.
